Department Overview

Under the general supervision of the Director of Radiation Physics, the Dosimetrist is a member of the treatment planning team. The Dosimetrist is familiar with the technical characteristics and operation of the radiotherapy platform and has training/expertise necessary to design, develop and implement radiotherapy plans by means of computer and/or manual computation. The Dosimetrist supports and implements safe patient care practices, and is cognizant of and supports the Hospital and the department’s mission statements.

Function/Duties of Position

Key Responsibilities & Performance Standards

  • Consults with Radiation Oncologists, Physicists and Radiation Therapy Technologists to determine appropriate patient-specific techniques to optimize treatment for the intended outcome, be it curative or palliative.
  • Coordinates treatment simulations, import of simulation data to treatment planning software, and tumor localization utilizing CT and other imaging modalities for treatment planning.
  • Generates plan(s) for 2D/3D/IMRT and stereotactic radiation treatments under the supervision of the physicist. When indicated, may require multiple versions or re-planning to account for changing conditions.
  • Coordinates with Radiation Physicists and Radiation Therapy Technologists in the proper implementation of the treatment plan.
  • Assists in routine QA of patient’s treatment record, including compliance with requests for such information made by outside centers, and integrating such information from outside centers into patient records.
  • Assists in the treatment planning education of residents, dosimetry students, radiation therapy technology students, medical physics graduate students.

Required Qualifications

  • Registered with the Medical Dosimetrist Certification Board and one year of clinical experience following CMD certification and performing radiation therapy treatment planning.
  • Preference will be given for formal courses, training, or work experience in Special Imaging Techniques and /or Radiation Dosimetry.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters in Medical Dosimetry
  • Competent with Department's current treatment planning software package(s); Eclipse, Brainlab, Tomotherapy, MiM, Mosaiq, Eye Plaque planning, HDR planning; Knowledgeable in the areas of anatomy, physiology, clinical oncology, radiobiology, radiation physics, and radiation safety
  • Perform treatment planning, knowledge of treatment planning simulation and imaging modalities
