Senior Design Managers (SDM), perform the work of Design Managers (DM) while also taking on additional responsibilities. They have an architectural background, understand the design and construction process from beginning to end, understand the synergies between building systems, and are highly engaged in the project initiation phase of construction projects. They are responsible for gathering preliminary strategic project information, often confidential, and developing the scope and scale of new and renovation projects to fulfil the needs and objectives of key stakeholders.
Design Managers are tasked with vetting project ideas and determining whether a project is feasible to build both from a construction standpoint and an operational perspective, and at times may be required to develop test fit plans, permit drawing sets, and/or code re-views. They are problem solvers who help develop solutions that meet the client's needs and comply with current codes, regulations, and OHSU standards/guidelines. In addition to their responsibilities as a Design Manager, a Senior Design Manager will supervise the work of Design Managers and any staff assigned to Design Manager tasks. They play a pivotal role in collaborating on institution-wide initiatives and projects and presenting formal reports to executive leaders. Moreover, the Senior Design Manager spearheads efforts to enhance project delivery, programming, and adherence to OHSU standards and best practices.
