Department Overview

The Student Center is a 26,000 square foot building located on Marquam Hill. We offer current OHSU students, GME residents and fellows, and their significant others, and current OHSU employees a place to gather, relax, exercise, and study. We have a number of amenities, including a gymnasium, wellness room, full locker rooms, pool and spa, media room, study spaces, computer kiosks, and the Intramural Sports program. The OHSU Campus Store and the Student Food Resource Center (FRC) are both located on the first floor of the Student Center. The Campus Store sells logoed merchandise, apparel, and gifts both in-store and online, and the FRC, sponsored by the OHSU Student Health & Wellness Department, provides free groceries, fresh produce, and basic needs items to OHSU students in the Portland area. We also support the All-Hill Student Council, Student Interest Groups, and coordinate several on and off-campus events throughout the year.

 

The Recreational Specialist position is an AFSCME position in the Student Center – located on Marquam Hill - that is responsible for conducting recreational activities that enrich the educational experience of students at OHSU. The position oversees recreational programming that promotes interaction between students, residents, fellows, members, and guests and helps to cultivate a sense of campus community. This position must work collaboratively with OHSU’s four schools (Dental, Medicine, Nursing and Public Health) and one joint college (Pharmacy), as well as staff, faculty, outside referee vendors and the Student Center staff and managers to ensure that the extracurricular needs of our students are met. Furthermore, this position is required to provide robust communication regarding intramural league schedules, cancellations, and playoff games, and strive to increase the awareness of the recreational programs at the Student Center so that they are recognized campus wide. Finally, the Recreational Specialist represents the Student Center by serving as a member of the front desk staff, performing front desk staff and Campus Store duties, participating in staff meetings and conducting required chemical readings for the pool and spa. All other duties asassigned.

Function/Duties of Position

  • Develop and oversee intramural sports leagues and recreational programs including the registration process, creating schedules for both regular season and playoffs, and communicating directly with players who include students, residents, fellows, employees , faculty, and staff who include Student Center, school/program admins, and dept. of communications), as well as referees on league/program related matters such as: promotion of leagues, cancellations, rule changes/updates, facility closures, and league standings.
  • Perform front desk and Campus Store duties including: member access and processing memberships, cashiering and processing merchandise returns, monitoring Campus Store apparel and supplies and replacing inventory as needed, conducting pool/spa chemical readings, washing towels, jerseys and lost & found laundry, monitoring cleanliness of facility and performing cleaning tasks, closing the POS system at end of day, processing the daily report, and special projects as needed. This position is required to attend quarterly or as scheduled staff meetings. 
  • Work directly with staff from Strategic Communications (Student News and OHSUNOW), All-Hill Student Council and schools/programs to promote intramural and recreational programming registration, league schedules, tournaments, and other recreational information. 
  • Monitor inventory and assess the condition of Intramural sports supplies including (but not limited to) the replacement of old or damaged equipment, tore or missing jerseys, working with Campus Store vendor to order championship t-shirts, etc. Communicate needs to the Associate Director of the Student Center so that replacement supplies and equipment can be ordered.
  • Conduct Team Captain’s meetings at the beginning of each intramural season to communicate league rules, attendance policy, game forfeiture rules and how they influence league standings and post season playoffs, and emergency operation procedures.
  • Assist the Student Center staff and management with non-recreational student events and activities.
  • Keep records and monthly statistics of formal recreational activities. Conduct program evaluations at the conclusion of each intramural league and recreational activity, analyze results and report findings with proposed solutions to Associate Director. Once finalized send results to Assistant Vice Provost for Student Life for annual reporting purposes.
  • Officiate intramural games and recreational programs as needed. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Two years of experience guiding recreational events and activities (e.g. sports event referee, overseeing or teaching swimming and/or aquatic exercises, organizing tournaments, planning community outings, planning and teaching crafts, etc.)
  • A Bachelor's degree in Physical Education or a field of recreation may be substituted for the two years of experience.
  • Highly motivated self-starter with positive attitude.
  • Strong time management and communication skills.
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team; exceptional customer service, phone skills, typing skills, computer skills including - word, excel, data entry, scheduling software, POS systems, SharePoint, Qualtrics, Teams etc.
  • Ability to create brochures/flyers.
  • CPR/AED/First Aid Certified within three (3) months.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three (3) years of experience coordinating recreational events and activities (e.g. Intramural sports, sports tournaments, fitness programs).
  • One (1) year of general office experience or equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • One year of work experience as a sports official - basketball, volleyball, and/or soccer officiating experience preferred.
  • CPR/AED/First Aid Certified

Additional Details

This position is located on Marquam Hill in Portland.

Hours of operation - Must be available to work evenings and occasional Saturdays. Varied hours depending on staffing availability, holidays and breaks.

The Recreational Specialist position is a .5 FTE benefited position.

Shifts are typically limited to 20 hours per week - 4-8 hours in length and may vary depending on schedule needs.
