Department Overview

The Senior Performance Improvement Consultant in Access Services, provides leadership and technical expertise in the implementation of the OHSU Performance Excellence System (OPEx) in service to OHSU’s Clinical Enterprise Strategic Plan.  Provides advanced internal consultation and coaching to Senior Leadership, Faculty Leadership, Healthcare Managers, Physicians, and Staff on improving overall patient access and capacity management. Provides focused coaching, training, and development to internal PI Consultants both within Ambulatory Care and the OHSU Practice Plan.  Leads other PI consultants, external consultants and project management teams to assist ambulatory leaders and faculty with design and implementation of the enterprise level standards as well as other key best practices across ambulatory access.  Designs, develops, and delivers components of the OPEx training curriculum at all levels of the organization.  Facilitates A3 Planning with select organziational strategies and goals.  Possesses and develops deep understanding of OPEx methods and management systems.  Plays an active leadership role in developing and improving components of our OPEx Deployment Plan.  Acts as the key assigned PI consultant on the strategic initiative of improving access across OHSU Health and supports other ambulatory strategic initiatives as assigned

Function/Duties of Position

Strategy Deployment

  •  Leads and develops A3 structured problem solving methodology within ambulatory care and the OHSU Practice Plan.  Effectively uses Leader Standard Work, Daily Management Systems, Improvement Rounds, and Visual Management to achieve and sustain our performance.  Works with the identified Sponors and Management Guidance Teams to organize our improvement work to achieve our strategic objectives and goals.   Works with Vice President, and Associate Vice President of  Ambulatory and Access Services to design, revise, and improve our OPEx deployment plan

Consultation/Coaching 

  • Serves as an expert consultant and advisor in OPEx/Lean/Performance Improvement methodologies and coaches other internal and external PI staff.   Coaches Senior Leaders, Management Guidance Teams, and Managers in the implementation and maintenance of their OPEx work.  Coaches Practice Leaders to help strengthen their skills, problem solve, and enhance their OPEx, Project Management, Analytic, Coaching, and Facilitation Skills.

Facilitation/Project Management

  • Leads complex and highly strategic work through improvement initiatives using advanced OPEx methods and tools.  Is an advanced practitioner of OPEx tools and methods. Drives improvements to positively achieve key institutional priorities and objectives.  Promotes and models change management tools and approaches.  Establishes standard work and daily management systems to assure that improvements are sustained

Education/Training 

  • Devlops and refines curriculum for practice leaders and ambulatory leadership to roll out key strategic initiatives such as improving overall patient access. Serves as the key content expert in industry leading practices, technology available as well as KPI standards. Develop, revise, and improve select components of our OPEx training offerings and sessions to assure that we are developing effective internal performance improvement capability and role development throughout the organization.  Develop new trainings/curriculum as needed.  Focused training provided to senior leaders, directors/managers, along with key faculty leaders

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in healthcare, science, business, engineering, or statistics.  Evidence of relevant education/training  in the area of Lean, performance improvement, change management and project management.
  • 7 years of experience in performance improvement. or 5 years in healthcare plus 3 years of leadership and/or prior performance improvement experience.  Previous work in Lean methodologies.  Formal experience in training and coaching.
  • Demonstrate through previous position responsibilities: 
  • Strong facilitation skills and abilities with evidence of successful Lean projects. 
  • Evidence of strong and effective Project Management skills.
  • Evidence of strong training and coaching skills.  Able to effectively coach at all levels of the organization.
  • Evidence of excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Evidence of the use of advanced Lean tools and method and superb organizational skills
  • Ability to work as a team member and being seen as a leader within a peer group.
  • Expertise in office automation computer software including word processing, PowerPoint, spreadsheet, flow diagram  and statistical programs 
  • Understanding of statistical and data analysis.
  • Lean Certification required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5 years in a healthcare setting preferred.   Experience working with senior leadership at an organizational or service line level
  • EPIC Cadence certification,
  • Six Sigma Master Black Belt, Lean Sensei  or other Training/Coaching certification preferred.  Change Management certification preferre

Additional Details

Normal office environment.  Generally follows M-F 0800-1700 work week with variability depending on Department and project needs
