Department Overview

The Senior Research Associate will independently lead research projects within the lab, collaborate with other research staff and students, and will provide training and mentoring of new staff and students. This individual is expected to exhibit a high degree of independence, capable of proposing, conducting and analyzing experiments to test a hypothesis and generate publication-quality data. They must be able to develop novel experimental approaches and identify and include all appropriate controls. This position is expected to be current with all relevant literature and to remain current by finding and synthesizing new research and literature related to their projects. This position is also responsible for generating publication-quality papers using their depth of knowledge in the field, and drawing on their skills in data analysis, visual presentation of data, and scientific writing and communication skills. The successful candidate will exhibit excellent problem-solving skills and be highly engaged and motivated to achieve their scientific goals.

 

This position offers opportunities for scientific collaboration with expert faculty and researchers, involvement in primary research projects, and manuscript authorship.

 

The Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine (PACCM) provides expert diagnosis and care of patients with lung diseases in our Pulmonary Clinic; allergy, asthma, and immunologic disorders in our Allergy Clinic; and of critically ill patients in our Intensive Care Unit. As part of PACCM, the Sleep Medicine Program provides collaborative care for patients with sleep disorders. In addition to our commitment to outstanding clinical care, PACCM is home to several outstanding research programs, conducting basic science research as well as clinical trials across a broad spectrum of subject matter. Our educational mission includes teaching on many levels, including but not limited to our fellowship programs in Pulmonary, Allergy, Sleep, and Critical Care Medicine.

Function/Duties of Position

Key Responsibilities & Performance Standards

 

Independent Research

  • Develop novel experimental approaches. Propose, develop, and conduct experiments to test hypotheses and produce publication-quality data.
  • Document and follow experiment protocols accurately; respond to unusual outcomes and be able to understand and modify technical or design issues.

Scientific Engagement & Communication

  • Independently source, analyze, and review scientific research for dissemination and discussion with other lab members.
  • Remain up to date with current research and literature related to your research and projects.
  • Maintain an understanding of other lab members' projects; lead collaborative planning efforts
  • Generate oral and written reports as required and requested
  • Produce publication-quality papers/manuscripts which are visually and scientifically engaging.
  • Present at meetings and conferences (local, national, international) as appropriate.

Lab Administration

  • Oversee lab equipment; work with division administration, PI(s), and other senior researchers as appropriate to maintain equipment, determine if equipment needs to be surplused and/or replaced, and whether new equipment is needed. Assist division administration with regular capital asset inventory.
  • Oversee lab/facility space and work with division administration for facilities requests.
  • Train staff, interns, and volunteers on daily lab operations, as well as experiment and research procedures and protocols; serve as a resource and knowledge expert for junior staff.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in a relevant field AND 1 year of relevant experience OR
  • Master’s Degree in a relevant field AND 5 years of relevant experience OR
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field AND 9 years of relevant experience
  • Working independently on projects and collaboratively in a team-oriented research environment.
  • Prioritizing multiple tasks at one time in a fast-moving environment.
  • Experience in Immunohistochemistry, RT-PCR, flow cytometry, and/or confocal microscopy.
  • Handling and working with laboratory
  • Prior experience with publishing in peer-reviewed journals
  • Expert knowledge of research practices
  • Extensive knowledge in animal physiology and immunology
  • Ability to contribute to the development of experiment methodology
  • Ability to problem-solve effectively
  • Ability to work with minimal/occasional supervision
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
  • Strong verbal communication and excellent written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Immunology, Physiology, Pharmacology, or Neuroscience
  • 5 or more years of experience
  • Project management experience
  • Preferred at least 2 papers published with first or last authorship in a peer-reviewed journal
  • Ability to use data visualization techniques and tools
  • Extensive knowledge in molecular biology, pharmacology, and/or neurobiology

Additional Details

  • This position is typically 8:00am-5:00pm, Monday through Friday. Evenings and weekends may be required on rare occasions, contingent on the requirements of any given experiment. Work is primarily conducted in person on the Marquam Hill campus in a scientific laboratory (“wet bench”), as well as a rodent husbandry environment.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. Sitting or standing for more than six hours per day. Ability to work with laboratory animals for extended periods of time.
