This is a full-time position within the Ocular Immunology lab. The Ocular Immunology Laboratory at Casey Eye Institute offers retinal autoantibody tests for cancer-associated retinopathy, melanoma-associated retinopathy, autoimmune retinopathy and optic neuropathy. Duties include receiving specimens and accessioning samples, tissue processing for histology, cryosectioning, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence, and performance of western blotting and ELISA for clinical studies.

 

Pay Range: $18.91 - $28.37 per hour, Commensurate with Experience

Function/Duties of Position

  • Preparation of protein extraction, performance of SDS-PAGE, electrotransfer of proteins, blot preparation, Western blotting for clinical studies, and preparation of reports.
  • Tissue processing for histology, cryosectioning, immunohistochemistry, performing tissue staining with autoantibodies, use of bright field microscopes.
  • Receiving specimens, accessioning samples, entering information into the electronic database, phone contact with clinical offices, keeping track of patients' specimens and payments.
  • Coordinating general lab activities in a precise and reliable manner, ordering supplies and equipment using Oracle system, maintaining inventories, preparing biochemical solutions and reagents, and keeping complete and accurate records. 
  • Additional duties as assigned by principal investigator.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's in relevant field OR

  • Associate's AND 3 years of relevant experience OR

  • 4 years of relevant experience OR

  • Equivalent combination of training and experience

  • Requires meticulous organizational skills, strong communication skills with the public as well as physicians/researchers, exceptional database management abilities, ability to work independently and multi-task, and work well with team members.   

  • Working knowledge of computer software to include Excel, Word, Power Point and Photoshop is helpful.  

  • Demonstrated evidence of strong written and verbal communication skills. 

  • Ability to manage competing priorities. 

  • Ability to meet deadlines and urgent patient and system needs. 

  • Ability to work independently; willingness to serve as a positive and professional role model. 

  • Must have demonstrated record of reliable attendance, punctuality and proven successful performance in past and present.

  • Ability to perform the job duties with or without accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with protein preparation and analysis by western blotting and immunocytochemistry.  

Additional Details

This position is primarily located in a laboratory environment, and will have exposure to human tissue samples and specimens. Must be able to travel between locations using stairs, elevators and tram. OHSU encourages use of public transportation for commuting to and from work due to limited staff parking.
