Department Overview

We are the Orthopedic and Spine Surgery unit as well as the Surgical Observation Unit for OHSU. Our primary patient populations include total knee and hip replacement patients, orthopedic oncology patients, spine surgery patients, and various other bone/joint patients who may be getting a revision, dealing with a fractured extremity, or a complication such as a non-union or infection. We also see a variety of observation/short stay patients who may be here for Urologic Surgery, Plastic Surgery, ENT, Emergency General Surgery, and Neurosurgery. Our unit collaborates very closely with PT/OT throughout the day to see how our patients are mobilizing and making progress. We also work together with Social Work, Case Management, Ortho and Spine Nurse Practitioners and Physicians Assistants as well as the Acute Pain Service on a regular basis to provide exceptional care for our patients. Our nurses are especially skilled in mobilizing patients, assistive devices, braces, managing chronic and post-op pain as well as utilizing evidence based practice and continuing education to care for our complex orthopedic/spine/short-stay population.

Function/Duties of Position

9KPV provides care to adolescent through geriatric patients ranging from 16-100+ who have a variety of diagnoses which require medical or surgical interventions and recovery for Orthopedic, Spine, Otolaryngology, and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) conditions.  9KPV also provides care for a variety of surgical observation patients who require monitoring after day surgery procedures for pain control, postoperative nausea and vomiting, surgical site monitoring or other indications.

 

Patient Populations:

  • Orthopedics: Joint replacement surgeries and revisions, orthopedic tumor surgeries, spine surgeries, fracture repairs, and other types of orthopedic care. Involves all aspects of pre and post-operative care including surgical site monitoring and drain assessments, safe progression of mobility, safety checks and pain management.
  • Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery: Includes new tracheotomies and total laryngectomies, tissue transfers (free flap or rotational flap), thyroidectomy, parathyroidectomy, and resection of head and neck carcinomas. Involves all aspects of pre and post-operative care including specialized and frequent airway management, artificial airways, respiratory, flap, drain assessments, safety checks, and pain management.
  • Oral Maxillofacial Surgery: Includes jaw fractures, reconstruction, dental abscess, and complex dental procedures. Involves all aspects of pre and post-operative care involving specialized and frequent airway management, respiratory assessments, safety checks, and pain management.

 

Required Qualifications

  • 1 years RN experience
  • BSN Graduates: Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from a program accredited by Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA) 30 days before start date
  • ADN Graduates: Associate Degree in Nursing from an accredited program 30 days before the start date
  • Associate degree Nurses required to enroll in BSN program within 3 years of hire and complete within 5 years of hire 
  • Current, unencumbered Oregon State Registered Nurse License 
  • BLS at time of hire and must be issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) 
  • BLS must not expire during orientation  
  • Ability to perform the job duties with or without accommodation

Additional Details

 

Length of Orientation – Experienced Nurse

  • External candidates: OHSU & Nursing New Employee Orientation (NEO) for about a week.
  • Either Transition to Practice (TTP) Program Specialty Fellowship/Fellowship Learning Pathway or Orientation experience for 3 days-26 weeks depending on the care area. An employment service agreement may apply.
