Department Overview

The Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine (PACCM) provides expert diagnosis and care of patients with lung diseases in our Pulmonary Clinic; allergy, asthma, and immunologic disorders in our Allergy Clinic; and of critically ill patients in our Intensive Care Unit. As part of PACCM, the Sleep Medicine Program provides collaborative care for patients with sleep disorders. In addition to our commitment to outstanding clinical care, PACCM is home to several outstanding research programs, conducting basic science research as well as clinical trials across a broad spectrum of subject matter. Our educational mission includes teaching on many levels, including but not limited to our fellowship programs in Pulmonary, Allergy, Sleep, and Critical Care Medicine. Function/Duties of Position

This position will entail coordination of multiple elements of human subjects’ research among Veterans for VA, foundation, and National Institutes of Health research grants. The Research Assistant 1 position is a highly organized and motivated research assistant who will assist in multiple elements of human subjects’ research among Veterans and other hospital patients at OHSU, Portland VAHCS, and beyond. The applicant will be expected to:

 

  • Assist with organizing study records
  • Assist in maintaining electronic databases
  • Help coordinate data transfers
  • Assist with scheduling activities of principal investigators
  • Assist in multiple administrative tasks
  • Communicate effectively and empathetically with patients and staff from diverse backgrounds
  • Assist with recruitment of patients from diverse backgrounds for multiple research studies
  • Assist in the review of medical records
  • Help transcribe and input of written and recorded data into a database
  • Help coordinate and schedule patient visits
  • Assist in conducting informed consent and administer patient surveys
  • Attend relevant research assistant educational opportunities at the Portland VA and OHSU

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (4 year), OR
  • Associate’s degree (2 year) AND 2 years of relevant experience, OR
  • 3 years relevant experience, OR
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Proficiency with: MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel, MS Access, and reference management software (e.g. EndNote, RefWorks)
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Knowledge of research methods and rules of patient confidentiality
  • Knowledge of Human Research Protection Policies (HRPP) and Institutional Review Board (IRB) Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) policies
  • Must complete blood draw training and certification within 6 months of being
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accomodation

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1 year of relevant experience in research
  • Experience in data management
  • Familiar with principles and methods in biostatistics
  • Skilled in high-volume, accurate transcription
  • Proficient in reviewing patient charts and medical documentation
