Department Overview

This is a 60% Supervisor position and a 40% Clinical Patient care position. The Outpatient Therapy Clinical Supervisor for Rehabilitation Therapy Services is responsible for leadership, training and supervision of Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and Speech Therapists for the Complex Medical, Neuro, Women's Health and Oncology Teams and who are assigned to the outpatient department of the Division of Rehabilitation. Personnel decisions of this position include employee selection, performance evaluation, disciplining, and retention. These decisions directly affect the fiscal performance of the department as well as its’ effectiveness and efficiency. Patient care related decisions include staffing, problem solving, monitoring of productivity and coordination with internal and external customers for engagement, collaborative programs and service excellence. This position is influential in promoting recovery and customer satisfaction to the patients served by the clinic. This position supervises approximately 21 staff members and together with the management team, is a resource for the OP dept.

Function/Duties of Position

Customer Service:

  • Maintains high quality customer service to both external customers (patient, referring providers, insurance carriers) and internal customers (OHSU health care providers and staff) that meets or exceeds the service standards of the health care industry.
  • Ensures prompt and professional communication efforts, crisis management and conflict resolution skills.
  • Facilitates positive intra-organizational relationships through joint projects.
  • Responds pro-actively in standard complaint processing.

Personnel Management

  • Directs supervision of all physical therapists, Occupational Therapists, and Speech Therapists for neuro/spec team Interviews, hires, orients, and trains employees under own supervision
  • Coordinates with Human Resources for recruitment and required processing of position changes
  • Communicates performance expectations, develops work plans and takes disciplinary actions for performance issues 
  • Monitors successful completion of competencies, proposes salary increases, assigns and approves work
  • Analyzes scheduling efficiency, productivity and coordinates with manager and teams in problem solving, provides follow up to improve variances
  • Assists employees with problem identification and resolution

Quality and Performance Improvement:

  • Participates, leads and coordinates continuous quality improvement which enhances clinical practice, the administrative process, and development of staff so that value added services are provided. 
  • Works with assigned staff to develop and support related group and individual work to optimize care, work life and communication within the unit and throughout the organization.
  • Assures communication to and from administration and other disciplines to service line. Partners with physicians and other disciplines in the achievement of patient care goals.
  • Adheres to OHSU Code of Conduct and all Hospital, Clinic and Rehabilitation Therapy Services Policy and Procedures
  • Participates as a member of the departmental compliance program
  • Maintains core competencies and demonstrate continuous application of these skills throughout the period of employment

Clinical Applications

  • Monitors scheduling errors, patient volume and flow and patient provider’s time utilization
  • Investigates patient and provider complaints
  • Demonstrates knowledge of national and state practice acts and Oregon Administrative Rules
  • Demonstrates continuing education in personnel management and appropriate clinical / healthcare management skills.

Required Qualifications

  • Physical therapist,Occupational Therapist, or Speech Therapist degree (Bachelors or higher)
  • Valid Oregon licensure in Physical, Occupational, or Speech Therapy with ASHA Clinical Competency Certificate; American Heart Healthcare Provider BLS
  • Physical therapist, Occupational therapist, or Speech therapist, with current Oregon licensure; 5 years experience in the field of physical, occupational, or speech therapy

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):

  • Experience in leading a group of therapy staff;
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills;
  • Union experience preferred;
  • Strong skills in problem solving, prioritization, decision making and time management;
  • Understanding of therapy team dynamics and ability to positively impact the work environment;
  • Adept with computer applications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters Degree or higher, healthcare administration coursework or degree

Additional Details

Occasional exposure to patients with infectious diseases.
