Department Overview

We're Oregon Health & Science University's Information Technology Field Services team (FTS), a department that reports into the Information Technology Group's Digital Strategies and Technology Services division. We are a department that provides direct support and services for endpoint technology that our customers at OHSU and partnerships use to pursue their vision: a healthier Oregon, and beyond.

 

All our work supports OHSU's academic, business, healthcare, research, and affiliated partnership initiatives. The Field Technology Engineering (FTEN) team is responsible for the management and deployment of operating systems of endpoint assets for OHSU and its partners.

Function/Duties of Position

Endpoint Engineering

  • Provides primary direction regarding the design, scripting, documentation, and maintenance of all endpoint images and configurations.
  • Designs and implements desktop virtualization images as required to meet the various missions of OHSU.
  • Provides escalation support for images and app volumes in the virtualized environment.
  • Develops processes to manage the integration of new applications into existing systems and software throughout the enterprise.
  • Designs, installs, configures, and maintains various monitoring tools geared towards endpoints.
  • Serves as technical leader for complex development projects; applies advanced knowledge of standard systems analysis principles, techniques, and established practices/procedures to projects where technical problems and objectives are minimally defined.
  • Develops and maintains high availability server infrastructure that is used to distribute software packages to endpoints.
  • Ensures that OHSU’s systems are designed with industry standards and best practices.
  • Participates and coordinates collaboratively with Tier 3 units in the configuration of provisioned systems and solutions.
  • Contributes to the preparation of new endpoint management proposals including system design, requirements traceability and system description.
  • Develops disaster response plans and recovery procedures for systems and endpoints under the positions areas of responsibility.
  • Provides 24/7 support for systems maintained by FTEN, this includes on-call support for emergency situations.
  • Develops and administers policies that pertain to all managed endpoints.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert in multiple areas including: Microsoft Configuration Manager, Jamf Pro, VMware Horizon, ThinOS, VMware Workspace One, PowerShell, and Active Directory (including group policy).
  • Evaluates and leverages industry trends and emerging technologies.
  • Researches and recommends enhancements and modifications to existing OHSU systems to maintain a feature rich and highly available technology environment.
  • Utilizes feedback path from Field Technology Analysts, other Infrastructure Analysts, other ITG departments and the user community to design and implement processes, fixes, enhancements, upgrades, etc. to increase field performance of endpoints.

System Analysis

  • Provides collection, analysis and interpretation of the various business processes affected by endpoint deployment and management.
  • As new updates become available, performs analysis to determine the best procedure to implement the upgrade and the new features that may be contained in the new upgrade, as well as ways to mitigate possible risks from the application of patches and enhancements.
  • Completes complex troubleshooting for incidents solved by endpoint management solutions or other incidents as directed by FTS management.
  • Analyzes system parameters and provides recommendations and implement solutions for scalability and performance improvement as pertaining to client endpoints.
  • Defines and writes clear and succinct technical documentation related to systems and applications as necessary.
  • Performs full hardware evaluation and testing for all client hardware and maintains knowledge of all product lifecycle management.
  • Assists in evaluating all options and alternatives with vendors and develops proposals and bids for new equipment or upgrades to existing equipment.
  • Assists application development teams with regards to endpoint solutions.
  • Documents system configuration and operating environment for future integration, reference and maintenance.

System Administration

  • Installs, configures, troubleshoots and repairs endpoint management server hardware, software and operating systems including Windows, Macintosh, and Linux, following established change management processes.
  • Provides support for endpoint management systems in a 24x7 production environment, this includes on-call support for all systems supported in an emergency situation.

  • Assists with hardware evaluation and selection.

  • Performs hardware monitoring and makes corrections as instructed by hardware vendors.

  • Documents system configuration and operating environment for future integration, reference, and maintenance.

  • Develops and documents system backup schedules and procedures coordinating with managers and administrators from other teams.

  • Performs system recovery and security breach mitigation procedures.

  • Develops processes to provide job activity/system problem notification via e-mail, paging, console display, etc.

  • Develops, reviews and updates, as required, departmental Standard Operating Procedures.

Project Management and Communications

  • Utilizes ITIL, LEAN and industry standard project management methodologies to implement and support all work activities ranging from formal projects to daily work.
  • Coordinates outside vendors and other ITG work units to provide project planning, scheduling, and resource management for IT infrastructure projects.
  • Manages and is responsible for proper change management, to include CAB submissions.
  • Participates in project kick-off, implementation, support and milestone meetings for those projects that require ITG resources for implementation and support.
  • Acts as the advocate for both ITG and the user community to present and/or assess project-related technical solutions and tools for implementation of new solutions.
  • Uses all relevant processes including project management systems, trouble ticket systems, service outage calendars, email, phone trees, paging systems and other communications tools as relevant.
  • Performs customer projects and tasks prior to or by expected due date and follow-up to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Works with customers and other ITG units to clearly communicate operational status, task status, goals, timelines, and project deliverables.
  • Communicates directly with the user community (through ITCs or directly to customer) upcoming endpoint technology changes, including seeking feedback and input.
  • Provides technical direction to large scale projects when applicable.
  • Works with ITG engineers and Field Technology Analysts to ensure they are integrating security at the beginning of a lifecycle of a system and that they are taking steps to ensure implementation of security “effective practices” over long term.
  • Communicates with internal and external customers in a clear, concise and appropriate business manner.

Security Administration

  • This position implements security best practices and procedures in all systems supported by the position.
  • Ensure that all OHSU security guidelines are adhered to when making system changes.
  • Administers security procedures on systems where responsibilities will include: risk assessments, intrusion prevention activities, intrusion detection/event correlation, security audits, forensic investigations, mitigation techniques.
  • Manage device encryption using a combination of onboard and third-party encryption solutions.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Two or more years of paid work experience as a Field Technology Analyst/Desktop Support Analyst, or Systems Analyst position.
  • Must have six years of cumulative paid working experience in the Information Technology field; OR Equivalent combination of education and experience where:
    • One year of experience will be substituted for an Associate’s degree
    • Two years of experience will be substituted for a Bachelor’s degree

Experience

  • Designing, implementing, and supporting new systems and infrastructure independently.
  • LEAN methodology or like processes to manage projects.
  • Supporting large mission critical systems in multiple production environments including solution design and tuning.
  • Proven expertise maintaining and delivering virtual systems and applications.
  • Networking protocols.
  • Installation of client and server operating systems and operating system patching.
  • Creating and implementing policies on client systems.
  • Crash analysis and troubleshooting.
  • Advanced experience using Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager.
  • Evaluation client hardware for a large environment (3,000 users and above).
  • Installation, configuration, and patching for applications and security fixes.
  • Understanding of Microsoft networks at the operating system level, file/directory security, and user account level.
  • Direct, hands-on experience with automated integration tools.
  • Account setup and maintenance and experience with Active Directory and LDAP services.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Expert skills using accepted change control management processes, including documentation.
  • Expert level knowledge of IT security best practices and processes.
  • Working knowledge and skills in Windows server architecture, configuration, and administration.
  • Expert skills with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Expert knowledge of image creation and deployment using Microsoft Systems Center Configuration Manager or an equivalent product.
  • Expert knowledge of macOS management, to include OS configuration, application deployment, patching, and policy delivery using Jamf Pro or an equivalent product.
  • Proficiency in the use of PowerShell and Mac equivalent products to support scripting and automation.
  • Expert knowledge and skills with virtual delivery systems, including image creation and deployment using VMWare or an equivalent product.
  • Working knowledge of Thin Client Devices using Windows embedded, ThinOS, or other technologies.
  • Superior and proven technology analytic skills that demonstrate accepted systems analysis processes including expert skills for root cause analysis.
  • Working knowledge of project management.
  • Strong knowledge of system and software quality assurance best practices and methodologies.
  • Expert knowledge of desktop architecture and design.
  • Microsoft Endpoint Protection or equivalent product.
  • Expert knowledge of creating software packages into .msi, .exe, .dmg or an equivalent file format.
  • Expert knowledge of Directory service (Microsoft Active Directory, LDAP interfaces, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Computer Science or related Information Technology field.
  • IT Consultant experience where the delivery of enterprise endpoint systems was a core competency for a diverse application and systems environment.
  • Desktop engineering and solutions provider in industry standard Tier 3 infrastructure.
  • Experience in a large network and campus environment (10,000 users).
  • Formally recognized Project Management Training.
  • Enterprise Experience with Systems administration (at minimum UNIX and Microsoft), PowerShell and other scripting.
  • Working knowledge of UNIX and Linux server architecture, configuration, and support.
  • One or more: Scripting and/or programming languages such as, or equivalent to Perl, UNIX Shell, C Shell, .NET, Visual Basic, Java, HTML, etc.
  • Expertise in administration of multiple security tools, including: Thycotic Privileged Access and Password Management Suite, Dell Data Protection Encryption Suite, Splunk, FireEye Endpoint Security, Manage Engine Patch Manager Plus.
  • Jamf 400 level certification.
  • Linux Certification.

Additional Details

Schedule is Monday - Friday, various hours 6:00am - 6:00pm. Schedule to be determined by manager and departmental need. Will also work on-call rotation as well as some weekend and non-standard business hours.
