Department Overview

Public Safety consists of more than 40 dedicated professionals responsible for ensuring the safety of our campus 24-hours a day, seven days a week. Public Safety is committed to serving our community with integrity, empathy and respect. As state certified police officers and community service officers, together with our dispatchers and administrative support, we work to maintain a safe and secure environment for all.

Function/Duties of Position

  • Ensure the safety and security of the OHSU community, including staff, students, patients, visitors, and other affiliates.
  • Ensure safe access to OHSU for staff, students, patients, visitors, and other affiliates.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant statutory and regulatory requirements (e.g., DPSST, Oregon statutes related to healthcare facilities, workplace violence, and campus security, Clery, FERPA, Title IX, HIPAA, CJIS, DNV, environment of care and NAIHO/ISO etc.).
  • Administrate, manage policy, improve and ensure best practice for assigned systems (OHSU Visitor Management, ID badges and access control, enterprise camera system, etc.).
  • Serve as the liaison for the University when communicating with outside law enforcement agencies regarding administrative matters.
  • Act as the liaison and responsible member of the command staff for the OHSU Workplace Violence Prevention Program.
  • Hiring, training and supervision of all non-sworn response resources both internal to the Department and Contract Security.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent experience in healthcare public safety/security leadership.
  • 5+ years of supervisory experience in hospital or medical center security and/or university public safety and/or related fields such as healthcare workplace violence or administrative experience.
  • Knowledge of:
    • Relevant laws
    • Security practices
    • Computer access control systems
    • CCTV systems
    • Computer skills
    • Budgeting
    • Spreadsheets & relevant office management software

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience.
  • At least 5 years leadership experience in law enforcement/public safety at a university medical center.
  • Knowledge of:
    • Clery Act compliance
    • NAIHO/ISO/Joint Commission/DNV compliance
    • State of Oregon Healthcare security regulatory compliance
    • Healthcare workplace violence prevention program management
    • Physical Environment systems management such as cameras, access control, panic buttons, body worn cameras, etc.
    • High-security containment lab security
