Department Overview

The Vollum Institute is a privately endowed research institute at Oregon Health & Science University dedicated to basic research that will lead to new treatments for neurological and psychiatric diseases. Vollum scientists have broad-ranging interests that coalesce around molecular neurobiology and cellular physiology. Their work has transformed the field of neuroscience and, in particular, have provided important advances in the study of synaptic transmission, neuronal development, neurotransmitter transporters, ion channels and the neurobiology of disease.

 

The purpose of the position is to perform research consistent with the goals of the PI, Dr. Tianyi Mao, Specifically, this position will focus on working with microscopy hardware and software, including develop and implement cutting edge microscopy for mapping and functional analysis of circuit mechanisms underlying sensorimotor interaction and neuromodulation.

Function/Duties of Position

  • Independently design, develop new services or technologies, implement and perform upgrades of multiple custom microscopy; Consistently provide intellectual contributions to the PI’s group and collaborators, aids in preparation of grant applications and publications/manuscripts as needed.
  • Assist with training and oversight of research assistants, and graduate students in the lab as appropriate, as well as assist with general lab operations and maintenance.
  • High quality presentation in and outside of the lab, microscopy demo for faculty, staff, other trainees, and active participation of lab-related scientific events.
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in relevant field and 3 years of relevant post-doctoral work experience.
  • Extensive experience with microscope hardware; extensive software experience related to imaging; extensive mouse survival surgery experience for longitudinal imaging; strong publication record; strong communication skills and work well in team settings.

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):

  • Knowledge with optics, hardware and coding; ability to learn novel and cutting-edge techniques and thrive in solving challenging problems in a supportive environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Additional 2 years custom microscopy experience.
  • Mapping and functional analysis of circuit mechanisms underlying sensorimotor interaction and neuromodulation.

Additional Details

Typical basic science research environment in a laboratory. This position is mostly on site, in person (Monday-Friday), and allows for a flexible schedule, some weekends or evening may be required to meet deadlines.
