Department Overview

With decades of academic laboratory experience in pathology and genetics, the Knight Diagnostic Laboratories deliver advanced diagnostic testing to make personalized medicine a reality. Specializing in oncology, rare genetic disorders, and infectious disease, the laboratories are CLIA certified and CAP accredited.  Our Medical Directors and seasoned technical staff have many years of experience in clinical testing and test development and are dedicated to providing the best quality service for physicians and their patients. Through our close partnership with the Knight BioLibrary and Histopathology Shared Resource Laboratories, research investigators can gain access to human biological specimens, histology, and immunohistochemistry services.

Function/Duties of Position

The Laboratory Assistant supports the Knight Diagnostic Genetics Laboratory by performing duties including cleaning glassware and instruments, sterilizing glassware and instruments making performing other duties to assure smooth day-to-day operation of the laboratory. 

 

Key Responsiblities:

  • Wash laboratory glassware and other equipment/instruments. Distribute clean glassware and equipment.
  • Maintain inventory of reagents and supplies for the laboratory. Make and aliquot reagents used in the laboratory per protocol.
  • Maintain clean and organized work spaces for the laboratory wet benches.
  • Monitor temperatures for incubators, refrigerators, and freezers.
  • Monitor eye wash stations and diH2O purity.
  • Retrieve specimens and/or charts as needed by technologists and the director. Assist technologists and directors with miscellaneous tasks as requested.
  • Follow established safety procedures in all areas of the lab.

Required Qualifications

Education and experience: 

  • High school diploma and at least two years of college science courses plus one year of college math or computer courses
  • OR High school diploma and successful completion of a lab Assistant Training Program including clinical lab experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Ability to complete time sensitive tasks according to protocols, and prioritize multiple tasks at one time
  • Excellent communication, analytical and organizational skills: both written and verbal
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team while being collaborative in resolving problems
  • Proficiency with computers running Windows and PC applications e.g. MS Excel, Oracle, Access, Word and Powerpoint.
  • Excellent customer service skills, both on the phone and in person
  • Energy and drive to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to maintain effective working relationships

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least two years of college lab science courses, plus one year of college math or computer courses
  • Clinical laboratory work experience including general knowledge of laboratory terminology, equipment, materials and techniques, and safety
  • Experience with sterilizing procedures strongly preferred
  • Working knowledge of Oracle
