Department Overview

Clinical Technology Services maintains medical and support equipment from pre-purchase to the end of the equipment's life cycle. This is done in a prompt, knowledgeable and cost-effective manner to ensure patient/employee safety, compliance with standards, and quality delivery of patient care.

 

The Biomedical Equipment Technician (BMET) 1 performs preventive maintenance checks and basic repairs on medical equipment under close supervision. This is the first of a three level series. The BMET 1 is distinguished from the higher levels by the assignment of more basic clinical technology and the degree of close supervision received. Technical consultation to personnel regarding pre- purchase planning and selection of equipment is usually not performed at this level.

Function/Duties of Position

Scheduled Maintenance and Performance Assurance

  • Under supervision, performs scheduled cleaning, lubrication, electrical/mechanical adjustments, calibration, performance assurance, safety testing, and replacement of worn or out-of-tolerance parts on patient care, laboratory and related equipment. 

Unscheduled Corrective Maintenance

  • Under supervision, diagnoses and corrects (within limits of ability and authority) minor malfunctions in medical, laboratory, and other related equipment; makes required performance measurements using conventional or custom test equipment; replaces defective parts; performs routine on sight assurance testing and recalibration of equipment in various locations in hospitals and clinics. Repairs and installations at this level are of a more basic level and somewhat routine.

In-Service (Teaching or Training)

  • Upon request, conducts technical in-service programs for nurses and medical staff on newly installed equipment, explaining theory of operation, calibration, operator maintenance responsibilities and safety; conducts similar in-services on other hospital equipment; conducts general electrical and safety programs as required by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, and technical theory programs for department staff and interested visitors.

Required Qualifications

  • An Associate’s degree in Biomedical Equipment Technology OR

     

  • Certification by ICC/USCC as a Certified BMET OR

     

  • An equivalent combination of training and experience.

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):

  • Understands and employs standard and specialized testing equipment, such as, safety analyzer leakage meters, digital and analog multimeters, electronic thermometers, optical wedges, oscilloscopes, voltage, time, event, and temperature recorders, tachometers, biological and physical signal simulators, voltage, resistance, temperature and time standards, and waveform generators.

Additional Details

Busy office environment with multiple demands and interruptions, primarily working with computer terminals, software, etc. May come in contact with radiations sources, human tissue/fluids, ann may be exposed to excessive noise.
