Department Overview

The Research Assistant supports clinical, translational, and outcomes-based research focused on genetic aortopathies and arteriopathies (e.g., Marfan syndrome, vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Loeys–Dietz syndrome). Under faculty supervision, the Research Assistant participates in structured research activities including clinical phenotyping, data abstraction, imaging and pathology review, literature synthesis, and manuscript development. The role emphasizes rigor, reproducibility, and scholarly development within an established research framework.

 

This is a temporary position.

Function/Duties of Position

Clinical Data Abstraction & Phenotyping

  • Perform detailed chart reviews using predefined data dictionaries
  • Abstract demographics, genetic data, imaging findings, operative details, and outcomes
  • Enter, validate, and maintain high-quality datasets in REDCap or equivalent platforms

Imaging & Pathology Support

  • Assist with structured review of vascular imaging (CT/MR angiography) under faculty guidance
  • Participate in qualitative review of dermal biopsy TEM images for hypothesis generation
  • Organize and curate representative images for figures, presentations, and manuscripts
  • Ensure image handling complies with IRB and publication standards

Literature Review & Evidence Synthesis

  • Conduct focused literature searches across vascular surgery, genetics, and molecular biology
  • Summarize key findings, gaps in knowledge, and areas of controversy
  • Develop annotated bibliographies and evidence tables to support ongoing projects

Manuscript & Scholarly Output Support

  • Draft sections of manuscripts (e.g., methods, results summaries) based on established protocols
  • Assist with figure legends, tables, and supplemental materials
  • Participate in manuscript revision in response to faculty and peer feedback
  • Contribute to abstract preparation for scientific meetings 

Research Operations & Team Collaboration

  • Participate in scheduled research meetings and provide project updates
  • Track assigned tasks, timelines, and deliverables
  • Communicate effectively with faculty, residents, fellows, and collaborators
  • Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and data integrity

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's in relevant field AND 1 years of relevant experience OR

  • Equivalent combination of training and experienc

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Ability to synthesize clinical and scientific information

  • Clear written and verbal communication

  • Reliability, accountability, and responsiveness to feedback

  • Familiarity with REDCap, reference managers, and basic statistics

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team while being collaborative in resolving problems.

  • Must be proficient with computers running Windows and PC applications e.g. MS Excel, Oracle, Access, Word and PowerPoint).

  • Ability to perform the job duties with or without accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Academic Medical Center experience preferred 

  • Experience in surgical clinical studies 

  • Database management, (RedCap, Access)

  • Experience in navigating electronic health records

Additional Details

Work schedule must be flexible between the hours of 6:00am and 6:00 pm. Must be able to work in both a clinic and office environment as well as travel to the Operating Room.
