Department Overview

Outpatient prescriptions and patient care are provided by seven retail pharmacies serving adult outpatients, pediatric outpatients/discharge patients, ophthalmology patients and clinic patients.

 

As the Pharmacy Technician Manager responsibilities include direct supervision of pharmacy technicians and education/training of staff, residents, interns and students. This person in this position is expected to create, enhance, and implement existing or new pharmacy services and initiatives. In addition, they will serve as a leader in an administrative role.

 

The person in this position will collaborate with other pharmacy administrators on compliance, quality, and safety assessments in conjunction with ongoing monitoring. They will be held accountable for process improvement, maintenance of practice standards, and compliance with accreditation standards and applicable laws and regulations. Additionally, the person in this position is expected to coordinate and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure operational efficiency that will have positive impact on patient outcomes.

Function/Duties of Position

Operations Management:

  • Manages day-to-day operations of technician work in outpatient pharmacy location ensuring a safe, efficient, cost-effective, and professional work environment. Redesigns and develops processes and programs for maximum safety and efficiency. Problem-solves issues identified by staff and internal/external customers. Oversees technician leaders and appropriately delegates responsibilities within the medication use system.

Human Resources:

  • Recruits, hires, trains, develops, and supervises assigned staff. Develops performance standards, conducts performance appraisals and GROW conversations.

Compliance:

  • Assures compliance and adherence to OHSU department standards, policies, procedures, as well as Board of Pharmacy rules and regulations. Maintains and updates policies and procedures.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent 
  • Two years of experience leading other staff members or interdisciplinary team members.

  • Three years of experience with responsibility for program coordination, evaluation, and project monitoring in a pharmacy setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in business administration, Management, Public Administration, or a field directly related.
  • Oregon State Board of Pharmacy Technician License
  • National Certification by Pharmacy Technician Certification Board 
  • Five years' of progressively increasing responsibility and/or work experience.

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):

  • Possesses strong interpersonal communications, presentation skills, and/or public speaking experience to communicate information and ideas clearly in both a verbal and written format based on the needs of the audience.
  • Ability to read, write, and perform pharmaceutical math calculations. 
  • Ability to organize and prioritize.
  • Computer/keyboard skills.
  • Manual dexterity.
  • Leadership or management training
  • Familiarity with pharmacy automation and technology, which may include integrated health record, as well as, pharmacy workflows including medication orders processing, preparation, and dispensing.
  • Knowledge of USP 795, 797, 800 guidelines. 

Additional Details

The manager will experience competing demands from pharmacy management, nurses, providers, pharmacy

staff and other healthcare professionals, as they attempt to influence policies, best practices and work flow.

The manager must deal with intense situations on a daily basis. In addition, within the healthcare setting there can be significant lack of control over the work pace, with frequent interruptions (work is often dictated by external factors) that may lead to mental fatigue or stress.
