Department Overview

A Research Assistant position is available in the Shi Laboratory in the Oregon Hearing Research Center to assist in research on the physiology, cellular and molecular biology of ear function. Projects will include: 1) studies on mice to measure cochlear function; 2) studies on the mechanisms of aging that caused damage to the cochlea; and 3) studies eardrum wound healing. The Oregon Hearing Research Center (OHRC) is part of the Department of Otolaryngology at the Oregon Health & Science University. Individuals who hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree with significant mouse physiology and molecular biology experience are especially qualified to apply. Applicants must be comfortable with using computers and working with animals.

Function/Duties of Position

  • Fine tissue (cochlear) dissection, histological procedures, and confocal imaging.
  • Protocols for measurement of acute or chronic acoustic stimulation of evoked auditory brain potentials.
  • Analysis and reporting of data. 
  • Administration of anesthetic agents and other protocol related agents.
  • Animal husbandry to maintain mouse colonies, and genotyping of transgenic mice. 
  • Additional responsibilities include tasks that contribute to the maintenance of lab operations such as placing animal orders and detailed record keeping.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's in relevant field OR 
  • Associate's AND 3 years of relevant experience OR 
  • 4 years of relevant experience OR 
  • Equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Knowledge of animal physiology and biology
  • Ability to perform the job duties with or without accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Possesses one to two years of laboratory experience, including expertise in animal physiology, dissection, harvesting of small cell populations, and fundamental molecular biology techniques such as confocal imaging, PCR, genotyping, and animal breeding)
