Department Overview

Adult Surgical Oncology Inpatient Care Unit for OHSU.

Our primary teams are Surgical Oncology, Medical Oncology, General Surgery, Gynecology Oncology, and Radiation Oncology. We collaborate with PT/OT, Dietitians, Pharmacy, Social Work, Case Management, Speech and Language Pathologists and other members of the multidisciplinary health care team to provide exceptional care for our patients.

We have 6-day shift positions in Surgical Oncology 

Function/Duties of Position

Our unit has 30 private beds and provides care for our Bone Marrow Transplant patients who require Negative Airflow Isolation. In addition, we support the Hepatic Arterial Infusion Pump program.  

Patient Populations: 

  • Surgical Oncology: Whipples, liver resections, 
  • Medical Oncology: Sarcoma, pain crisis, failure to thrive, end of life 
  • General Surgery: Esophagectomies, colon resections,   
  • Bone Marrow Transplant: Chemotherapy, GVHD, pain crisis, failure to thrive, end of life  
  • Gynecology Oncology, TAH BSO, lap hysterectomy, chemotherapy, brachytherapy
  • Radiation Oncology: I-131, pheochromocytoma treatment 
  • General Oncology: End of life care, inpatient hospice. 

Department Specific Working Conditions:

Exposure to chemotherapy, radiation, and isolatable conditions are a risk of working on this unit. For this reason, staff are required to complete initial and annual education, and proof of competency to minimize risk.

Required Qualifications

  • Must have 1-year current adult acute care RN experience.  
  • Completion of chemotherapy/immunotherapy provider course within 6 months of hire. 
  • Earn an average of 12 oncology related contact hours per year or hold a current cancer-specific certification  
  • BSN Graduates: Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from a program accredited by Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA) 30 days before start date.
  • ADN Graduates: Associate Degree in Nursing from an accredited program 30 days before the start date.
  • Associate degree Nurses required to enroll in BSN program within 3 years of hire and complete within 5 years of hire
  • Current, unencumbered Oregon State Registered Nurse License
  • BLS from AHA required. New hires will be enrolled and required to complete during orientation.
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • National Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) or Certified Medical-Surgical Nurse (CMSN)
  • Radiation Safety training 
  • Experience in a high-level acuity medical facility 
  • Minimum of 1 year of Adult Acute Care Cardiac experience within the past 2 years 

Additional Details

Length of Orientation – Experienced Nurse

  • External candidates: OHSU & Nursing New Employee Orientation (NEO) for about a week.
  • Either Transition to Practice (TTP) Program Specialty Fellowship/Fellowship Learning Pathway or Orientation experience for 3 days-26 weeks depending on the care area. An employment service agreement may apply.
