Department Overview

The On Track OHSU! Middle School Outreach Assistant (Non-OHSU Student Worker) will primarily be assisting at schools in North and Northeast Portland, Parkrose, and Woodburn with occasional time spent in our main office located on Marquam Hill.

 

Outreach activities are generally held six days per month on a weekday with an approximate 6–8-hour commitment (8am-4pm) on each of those days.

Function/Duties of Position

On Track OHSU! is a health science equity pathway program for middle through high school students. This student worker will be responsible for assisting the Middle School Program Manager with middle school outreach activities at several middle schools in North and Northeast Portland, Parkrose, and Woodburn, OR. Outreach activities are generally held six days per month with an approximate 6-8 hour commitment (8am-4pm) on each of those days. Primary Duties include:

  • Lead classrooms of middle school students through a pre-developed science-based activity.
  • Monitor high school student volunteers as they work with middle school students.
  • Communicate clearly with all parties, including middle school students, teachers, administrators, office staff, and OHSU staff.
  • Work with Middle School Program Manager to prepare for these events, including organization of materials and event logistics.

Required Qualifications

  • Clearly indicate on your resume and/or application that you are a student enrolled in:
    • Undergraduate Program (minimum 6 credit hours), OR
    • Graduate Program (minimum 4.5 credit hours)
  • Experience working with youth
  • Willingness to serve as a positive and professional role model 
  • Demonstrated record of reliable attendance, punctuality and proven successful performance
  • Reliable access to a personal vehicle to travel to North Portland, Parkrose, and Woodburn school sites and to Marquam Hill office
  • Ability to lead middle school youth through activities
  • Willingness to direct and manage a classroom of students
  • Knowledge of computer hardware and software, especially PowerPoint
  • Confidence communicating with OHSU staff, teachers, office staff, and administrators

Preferred Qualifications

  • Enrolled in School of Education coursework OR STEM coursework with a strong interest in working with youth in a classroom
  • Past or present participation in a diversity program or group
  • Experience leading middle school age youth through activities
  • Demonstrated experience working within school systems
