The Allergy and Clinical Immunology (ACI) clinic at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) provides comprehensive, evidence-based evaluation, diagnosis, and management of pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients with allergic, asthmatic, and immunologic disorders. Care is provided across the lifespan and includes outpatient services at clinic locations in Portland and Beaverton, as well as inpatient consultation services at OHSU and Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.

 

The ACI practice offers a broad range of specialty services, including allergy skin testing, medication and food challenges, biologic therapies, subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT), oral immunotherapy (OIT), and patient and family education. The multidisciplinary team includes physicians, advanced practice providers, fellows, residents, nurses, and other healthcare professionals who collaborate to provide safe, coordinated, and patient-centered care.

The Allergy and Clinical Immunology Registered Nurse (RN) is an integral member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team and is part of the Medicine Specialties clinical nursing staff supporting the Allergy and Clinical Immunology practice. The RN works closely with the ACI Medical Director and the Medicine Specialties Nurse Manager to support safe, efficient clinical operations and provide high-quality specialty nursing care to pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients with allergic, asthmatic, and immunologic disorders.

 

Using professional nursing judgment and specialty knowledge, the RN performs comprehensive nursing assessments, telephone and electronic triage, care coordination, and evidence-based patient and family education. The RN assesses and prioritizes acute and changing clinical conditions, including allergic reactions and risk for anaphylaxis; initiates appropriate nursing interventions; and escalates care when clinically indicated. Responsibilities also include coordinating follow-up care, testing, referrals, medication management, and communication across the interdisciplinary healthcare team.

 

The RN provides nursing care and support for specialty diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including allergy skin testing, medication and food challenges, subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT), oral immunotherapy (OIT), and biologic therapies. Responsibilities include patient assessment and preparation, medication administration, monitoring for therapeutic and adverse effects, recognition and management of allergic reactions, patient and caregiver education, and accurate clinical documentation. Care is provided within the RN scope of practice and established organizational policies, protocols, and clinical workflows.

 

The RN contributes to efficient clinical operations, quality improvement, evidence-based practice, and the advancement of specialty nursing care. Responsibilities may include supporting patient flow and clinical operations; maintaining medication, infection prevention, equipment, and regulatory standards; contributing to clinical workflows, protocols, policies, and educational resources; supporting staff education and competency development; and serving as a clinical resource. The RN demonstrates professional nursing leadership through clinical expertise, collaboration, mentorship, precepting, shared governance or committee participation, and contributions to initiatives that improve patient safety, clinical outcomes, consistency of care, and the patient and family experience.

• Minimum two (2) years of clinical nursing experience in the last 5 years.
• BSN Graduates: Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from a program accredited by Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA) 30 days before start date.
• ADN Graduates: Associate Degree in Nursing from an accredited program 30 days before the start date.
• Associate degree Nurses required to enroll in BSN program within 3 years of hire and complete within 5 years of hire
• Current, unencumbered Oregon State Registered Nurse License
• Current, unencumbered Washington State Registered Nurse license or ability to obtain within six  months of hire.
• BLS from AHA required. New hires will be enrolled and required to complete during orientation
• Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation

 

• National certification in ambulatory care nursing or another relevant specialty certification is preferred
• Recent nursing experience (within the last five years) in an Allergy and Clinical Immunology practice caring for pediatric and adult patients with allergic, asthmatic, and immunologic disorders.
• Experience with allergy specialty therapies and procedures, including subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT), oral immunotherapy (OIT), biologic therapies, allergy skin testing, and medication or food challenges.

Length of Orientation – Experienced Nurse

• External candidates: OHSU & Nursing New Employee Orientation (NEO) for about a week.
• Either Transition to Practice (TTP) Program Specialty Fellowship/Fellowship Learning Pathway or Orientation experience varies depending on the care area. An employment service agreement may apply.
• New graduate registered nurses who have successfully completed a senior practicum in the Allergy and Clinical Immunology practice at OHSU, and who demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and competencies required for the role, may be considered for employment.
