Department Overview

The mission of the Information Technology Group (ITG) is to develop, implement and maintain technology-based services and solutions that enable OHSU to effectively manage information to accomplish its missions.

 

The Virtual Desktop and Applications (VDAP) unit provides for application integration, delivery and remote access to desktop applications to provide ITG systems support across all OHSU healthcare, academic and research missions. This includes but is not limited to the Enterprise Application management, and solution delivery to sustain the current and future virtual desktop environment systems. As detailed below, the individual positions within this work unit will be required to collaborate and assist staff from other technology work units while working remotely.

Function/Duties of Position

System Engineering

  • Designs, develops, and maintains virtual applications and virtual desktops to meet the various missions of OHSU.
  • Designs, develops, and maintains the high availability infrastructure, including clustered systems and server farms, necessary for large enterprise deployments of virtual environments.
  • Serves as technical leader for complex development projects; applies advanced knowledge of standard systems engineering principles, techniques and established practices/procedures to projects where technical problems and objectives are minimally defined.
  • Contributes to the preparation of new system proposals including system design, requirements traceability and system description.
  • Ensures that OHSU’s systems are designed and engineered with industry standards and best practices.
  • Designs, develops, and maintains various remote access and remote control tools.
  • Provides engineering guidance to Field Technical Services regarding the Citrix workstation client version and update level.
  • Designs, installs, configures, and maintains various monitoring software applications for remote monitoring of systems, deployment status, load balancing, etc.
  • Develops disaster response plans and recovery procedures for systems under the positions areas of responsibility.
  • Participates in disaster recovery exercise and tabletops to test disaster recovery plans and procedures.

System Analysis

  • Provides collection, analysis and interpretation of the various business processes affected by applications integration efforts.
  • As new updates become available, performs analysis to determine the best procedure to implement the upgrade and the new features that may be contained in the new upgrade, as well as ways to mitigate possible risks from the application of patches and enhancements.
  • Analyzes and reconciles system back-end (hardware/software) performance and functionality with field-based (user facing) performance and functionality; utilizes feedback path from Field Technology Analysts to develop processes, fixes, enhancements, upgrades, etc. to ensure that theoretical and designed performance characteristics meet field expectations.
  • Evaluates or develops tools and scripts to facilitate improvement and to support ongoing maintenance of a growing environment.
  • Configures, and maintains various monitoring software applications.
  • Analyzes system parameters and provides recommendations and implement solutions for scalability and performance improvement.
  • Defines and writes clear and succinct technical documentation related to systems and applications as necessary.
  • For new systems: formulates operational concepts, performs mission and functional analyses, risk analysis, selects system architecture, allocates requirements and prepares specifications.
  • Evaluates and leverages industry trends and emerging technologies Researches and recommends enhancements and modifications to existing OHSU systems in order to maintain a feature rich and highly available technology environment.
  • Evaluates all options and alternatives with vendors and develops proposals and bids for new equipment or upgrades to existing equipment.
  • Documents system configuration and operating environment for future integration, reference, maintenance, disaster recovery and incident response.

System Administration

  • Provides maintenance, configuration, monitoring (security and performance), tuning, and account administration, for remote delivery and virtualization systems.
  • Provides support for large mission critical systems in a 24x7 multiple production environment.  This includes Tier III on call support for all systems and applications supported.
  • Develops patch management processes and schedules, and applies operating system updates, application updates and upgrades for servers.
  • Assists with hardware evaluation and selection, installation, configuration.
  • Performs hardware monitoring and makes corrections as instructed by hardware vendors.
  • Documents system configuration and operating environment for future integration, reference, maintenance, disaster recovery and incident response.
  • Develops and documents system backup schedules and procedures coordinating with managers and administrators from other teams and work units.
  • Provides monitoring and performance feedback on system backups.
  • Supports Unit, Integration, Load, Performance, System and Migration testing efforts and define thresholds for monitoring various metrics of the server environment.  
  • Performs system recovery and security breach mitigation procedures.
  • Develops and maintains processes to provide job activity/system problem notification via e-mail, paging, console display, etc.
  • Develops, reviews and updates, as required, departmental Standard Operating Procedures and Operational Practices.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Computer Science or related field and three years of progressively responsible Information Technology related experience leading to proven proficiency and subject matter expertise in the areas outlined within the class specification; OR

  • Equivalent alternative educational experience that includes approved coursework, professional certifications as outlined below, vendor training, and seven years of documented professional experience leading to proven proficiency and subject matter expertise in the areas outlined within the class specification; OR

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Vendor certifications in appropriate technologies as required (Citrix, VMware, Microsoft).

Experience

  • Experience with Application Virtualization and Desktop Virtualization.
  • Experience with the technologies used to deliver virtual desktop and application solutions.
  • Experience in designing, implementing and supporting new systems and infrastructure independently.
  • Experience in supporting large mission critical systems/applications in multiple production environments.
  • Experience with data center virtualization technologies.
  • Experience with networking protocols.
  • Experience installing, maintaining, patching, and troubleshooting Microsoft server and workstation operating systems.
  • Experience with Microsoft file/directory security, group policy, and scripting technologies.
  • Enterprise experience with Microsoft Active Directory and LDAP services.
  • Experience with crash analysis and troubleshooting.
  • Experience installing and configuring applications.

Skills and Abilities

  • Advanced knowledge and skills with virtual application and virtual desktop solutions.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Image creation and deployment using various technologies.
  • Advanced broad-based “IT technical generalist” skills.
  • Analytical skills that demonstrate accepted systems analysis processes including root cause analysis.
  • Advanced knowledge and skills in Windows architecture, configuration, and administration.
  • Advanced knowledge of Windows security at the operating system level, file/directory level, and user account level.
  • Advanced knowledge of Directory service (Microsoft Active Directory, LDAP interfaces, etc.).
  • Intermediate knowledge of one or more scripting and/or programming languages such as PowerShell.
  • Advanced knowledge of IT security best practices and processes.
  • Advanced knowledge of system and software quality assurance best practices and methodologies.
  • Intermediate knowledge of project management.
  • Intermediate knowledge of change control management processes.
  • Intermediate knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Anti-Virus administration (or equivalent).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a large network and campus environment.
  • Experience with project management.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Identity Providers (IDP).
  • Intermediate knowledge of Authentication (certificates, FIDO, smartcards, RFID, biometrics, NFC, etc.).
  • Intermediate knowledge of Federation (OAUTH, SAML, etc.).
  • Intermediate knowledge of SSO and pass-thru solutions for VMware Horizon and Citrix.
  • Intermediate knowledge of kiosk/generic user solutions for VMware Horizon and Citrix.
  • Intermediate knowledge of rapid authentication solutions with Imprivata.

Additional Details

Telework with some onsite meetings as required.  Schedule Monday – Friday, various hours 6:00am – 6:00pm. Schedule to be determined by manager and departmental need.  Will also work on call rotation with some weekend and non-standard business hours as necessary.
