The Knight Cancer Institute Infusion Center manages various hematologic malignancies, solid tumors, and benign disorders 7 days/week, 365 days/year.

Position Summary:

 

OHSU classification: Clinical Associate APP, represented by the Oregon Nurses Association & Advance Practice United, subject to the active collective bargaining agreement.

 

This role is responsible for the clinical management of patients in the outpatient infusion unit, ensuring the delivery of coordinated, high-quality, and efficient care.

 

This Clinical Associate-APP practices independently, while also coordinating care with the patient’s team of physicians, APPs, RN coordinators, and other allied health professionals.

 

The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment and demonstrate clinical knowledge and oncologic experience to support a complex patient population.

 

​The Clinical Associate-APP delivers care aligned with a defined scope of practice in Outpatient Adult Hematology & Medical Oncology, with work expectations operationalized through departmental workflows, productivity standards, and performance expectations consistent with the collective bargaining agreement and institutional policies.

 

​This role is structured to meet contract-defined work expectations, aligned with the clinical coverage model and patient care needs in the Infusion Center.

 

Schedule: 

• Coverage: Monday through Sunday (7 days on / 7 days off)
• Weekday hours: 7:30 AM – 7:30 PM
• Weekend hours: 8:00 AM – 6:30 PM 
• Note: Unit operates 365 days a year 

Location:

Center for Health & Healing, Building 2, multiple floors

 

Clinical Responsibilities: 

• Respond to and manage adverse infusion reactions and other emergencies for patients who have received cellular therapy, stem cell transplant, biological therapy, and/or chemotherapy, and who may be participating in clinical trials;
• Assess patient condition when notified of an urgent need, and order necessary medications, imaging studies or other supportive care interventions; 
• Communicate with primary treatment team regarding adverse reactions or urgent patient issues; 
• Triage phone calls from patients and answer questions;
• Provide patient education;
• Provide consultation to Outpatient Treatment Unit (OTU) nurses;
• Ensure that the OTU has APP coverage at all times by working collaboratively with colleagues and covering for colleagues as needed when peers are on leave;
• Provide urgent medical care for patients requiring same day evaluation; 
• Provide medical care independently, while also coordinating care with the patient’s team of physicians, APPs, RN coordinators, and other allied health professionals;
• Review labs and imaging as appropriate;
• Assure appropriate setting of care (ambulatory, inpatient, critical care, acute care) 
• Document subjective and objective findings, assessment and plan clearly and accurately in progress notes according to OHSU guidelines;
• Maintain communication with primary care providers and other individuals. 

​​​General responsibilities:

 

All APPs are expected to maintain professional standards in all aspects of role performance, including consistent participation in unit and departmental meetings, routine monitoring and timely response to organizational communications (e.g., email), and adherence to established deadlines for institutional and departmental requirements. ​​

 

Experience:

Minimum of 2 years APP experience in hematology and/or medical oncology

Completion of an APP Fellowship in Hematology/Oncology may substitute for two years of the required experience.

 

Education:

 

Successful completion of a Master’s Degree in Nursing or Master of Science in Nursing in a recognized APRN specialty ( Practitioner),

Successful completion of a Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant/Associate Studies from an accredited program.

 

Registrations, Certifications and/or Licenses: 

• Current RN and APRN licensure with the Oregon Board of Nursing
• Licensure with Washington Board of Nursing (within 90 days of start date)
• Current ANCC (or equivalent) Certification
• ​DEA Certification
• ACLS Certification

• ​Current PA licensure with the Oregon Medical Board
• PA licensure with the Washington Medical Board (within 90 days of start date)
• ​Current NCCPA Certification
• ​DEA Certification
• ACLS Certification

• ​Ability to prioritize, organize, and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment
• ​Effective communication skills, including clear, concise, and professional interaction with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams
• ​Ability to collaborate across disciplines and contribute to coordinated, team-based care
• ​Sound clinical judgment and decision-making, including the ability to recognize and respond to clinical deterioration
• ​Proficiency in documentation and use of electronic health record (EHR) systems
• ​Ability to adapt to changing clinical demands, workflows, and patient volumes
• ​Strong attention to detail and commitment to patient safety and quality care
• ​Ability to provide education to patients, families, and learners (e.g., students, trainees, new APPs)
• ​Demonstrated professionalism, accountability, and reliability in meeting responsibilities and deadlines
• ​Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion in handling sensitive information
• ​Commitment to continuous learning and adherence to institutional policies, standards, and evidence-based practice​

Physical Demands:

• Must be able to travel between multiple floors quickly in cases of patient emergencies.

• Experience working in an Infusion Center
• Experience working with clinical trials and experimental therapeutics
• Experience with EPIC and Beacon
• Hematology/Oncology Certification
• ​Ability to recognize and manage oncologic, chemotherapy, biotherapy management, and cellular therapy-related complications), including monitoring and toxicity management
• ​Strong clinical judgment and timely escalation of care for acutely ill and immunocompromised patients
• ​Effective communication with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams
• ​Proficiency in EHR documentation, order entry, and utilization of oncology-specific treatment plans and pathways
• ​Ability to calmly educate patients, families, and learners during an infusion reaction and/or patient emergency
• ​Strong attention to detail and adherence to safety standards related to high-risk therapies and immunocompromised populations
• ​Commitment to evidence-based practice, regulatory standards, and continuous professional development
