Department Overview

The Vice President, Specialties is a senior executive leader accountable for the overall performance, strategic direction, and operational oversight of Adult Specialty services across OHSU Health. Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Chief Ambulatory Officer, this role serves as the primary administrative leader and dyad partner to physician leadership to advance high-quality, patient-centered care across the health system.

 

The Vice President provides executive oversight of a comprehensive portfolio spanning ambulatory clinics, specialty and subspecialty programs, and affiliated care delivery sites across OHSU Health.

In close partnership with clinical, academic, and operational leaders, the Vice President sets and executes strategy, drives access and growth, advances quality and safety, and ensures strong financial and operational performance across a coordinated, system-wide model of care. This leader is responsible for advancing operational excellence, standardizing workflows, and leading transformation efforts that improve efficiency, care team effectiveness, and patient experience.

 

The Vice President builds and sustains strong relationships with physician, faculty, and operational leaders, and works collaboratively across the organization to design and optimize care models that support scalable, high-performing specialty services across the continuum of care.

 

In alignment with system governance, the Service Line VP is accountable for position (FTE) approvals, capital investment planning, and resource allocation decisions, ensuring disciplined stewardship and alignment with enterprise priorities in partnership with finance and operational leaders.

Function/Duties of Position

Strategic Planning

  • Define and lead the strategic direction for Specialties, including growth, optimization, and portfolio management, informed by market trends, patient needs, and competitive positioning.
  • Partner with executive, clinical, and operational leaders to align strategy, operational planning, and system-wide priorities across OHSU Health.
  • Identify and advance strategic growth opportunities, including access expansion, program development, and care model innovation across ambulatory and procedural services.
  • Translate enterprise strategy into actionable plans that drive performance, scalability, and long-term sustainability.
  • Build and leverage matrixed relationships to influence decision-making, drive execution, and achieve performance objectives.  

Financial Strategy

  • Maintain overall fiscal accountability for Specialties, including position approvals, budget development and performance, and capital planning; oversee and ensure disciplined management of staffing levels and overall labor and operating expenses in partnership with operational and finance leaders.
  • Monitor financial performance, analyze variances, and implement corrective actions to achieve budget and margin targets.
  • Optimize resource utilization, productivity, and cost structure while maintaining high-quality patient care and access.
  • Partner with physician and administrative leadership to evaluate productivity, reimbursement, and program performance to inform strategic decisions.

Performance & Quality

  • Lead operational performance across Specialties, leveraging data to optimize access, utilization, throughput, and care delivery.
  • Partner with clinical and operational leaders to standardize workflows, improve efficiency, and enhance the patient and care team experience.
  • Advance access strategies through improved clinic utilization, digital capabilities, and alignment of capacity with patient demand.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and quality standards across all sites of care.
  • Drive the adoption of innovative care models, including virtual care and digital access solutions, to expand reach and improve patient engagement.

Leadership & Organizational Effectiveness

  • Build and sustain strong relationships with department chairs, medical directors, and operational leaders to support alignment and execution across the enterprise.
  • Lead, develop, and engage a high-performing team, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Support recruitment, development, and retention of clinical and operational talent in partnership with physician and HR leadership.
  • Promote a learning environment that supports education, research, and professional development across the organization.
  • Conduct routine clinic site visits to help evaluate and ensure standard work implementation and improve employee well-being

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in Health Care, Business Administration or a related field
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in healthcare, with a focus on ambulatory services and medical, surgical specialty experience.
  • Comprehensive understanding of healthcare care operations, access management, and healthcare industry trends.
  • Proven track record in strategic planning, financial management, and achieving operational excellence.
  • Strong leadership and team-building skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate diverse teams.
  • Experience in driving change and innovation within a complex healthcare environment.
  • Broad knowledge of modern healthcare and business administration, systems, practices and principles.
  • Advanced quantitative knowledge necessary to analyze data and make informed decisions.
  • Effective managerial and administrative capabilities as applied to the management of multiple programs and clinics.
  • Effective organizational, planning, controlling, and project management abilities to include:

  • Proven track record of initiating change and innovation
  • Strategic thinking, planning and problem solving
  • Developing goals and priorities for large healthcare organizations
  • Superior communication skills, both in writing and verbal presentations
  • Ability to function in a fast paced and changing environment with multiple priorities and objectives

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with academic medical center settings, faculty practice plans, and research integration is highly desirable.
