Department Overview

The Clinical Financial Operations leader of the Knight Cancer Institute (KCI) is a functional leader who has oversight and accountability for all key financial processes and programs that enable optimization of the operational and financial performance of KCI accounting for $1B+ of revenue scope. Essential duties include preparation of materials for KCG Board meetings, annual operating and capital budgets, operating efficiency, clinical performance and operating reviews and assessments, clinical capacity optimization, business case development and execution, and overall process/tool/system improvements.

 

The role is responsible for ensuring that financial resources are efficiently and optimally deployed in support of KCI strategy, through close partnership and engagement with physician leaders, operations, nursing, pharmacy, facilities and others.

 

In partnership with the CFO, the role is also responsible for working collaboratively, and supporting, strategic and operational programs and processes in close partnership with OHSU Finance.

Function/Duties of Position

Finance Leadership

  • Participates as a member of the CFO’s leadership team.
  • Acts as a key strategic partner to the operational and clinical leaders in KCI and OHSU (CNE, Pharmacy, Ambulatory, Ancillary, Physicians) representing finance at key clinical operations forums.
  • Assures that financial resources are appropriately deployed across KCI that result in optimizing the operational and financial performance of KCI, including labor, capital, and strategic initiatives.
  • In partnership with OHSU finance and operations, leads Vizient ODB productivity benchmarking efforts across all operational areas, ensuring KCI leaders have clear visibility into performance drivers, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency, and partnering with leaders to sustain optimal productivity levels and cost structure.
  • Supports and guides the annual KCI budgeting process, including establishing financial targets, defining labor ratio benchmarks, aligning assumptions with operational strategy, and ensuring financial targets are achievable, transparent, and operationally grounded.
  • Maintains the highest standards of integrity, loyalty, and enthusiasm, projecting self-confidence and having the presence, knowledge base, and stature to gain the respect of peers, subordinates, physicians, staff, board members, executives, and external stakeholder groups.
  • Leads a team and develops talent – raises the bar related to operational finance capabilities and standards on the team, holds team to increasing performance standards, creates growth opportunities for critical operational finance talent, creates formal and intentional capabilities development plans for finance team members, and creates a culture of talent development.

Financial Operational Partnership & Entity Support

  • Partners with CFO on the development of Board of Directors (BOD) materials for KCI.
  • Assesses the operations and financial performance of ongoing clinical and operational programs within KCI through the performance of periodic reviews focusing on process improvements, emerging risks in the market, changes in payor mix and resultant profitability, operating costs and wage changes to eliminate waste and maximize return on investment, ensuring the ongoing viability of the program. 
  • Leads active and regular assessments of operational efficiency and financial performance of KCI; partners with operational and clinical leadership to develop recommendations based on these assessments.
  • Works in partnership with other members of the finance leadership team to drive financial planning & analytics processes and programs for KCI – including annual budget process, growth strategy development approach, weekly and monthly business reviews, financial close reporting and analytics.
  • Partners with key operational and clinical leaders on critical KCI operational governance committees.

Capital Governance and Position Control Management

  • Leads and facilitates monthly financial and operational performance reviews for oncology clinical functions for KCI including Inpatient, Radiology, Pathology, Radiation Oncology, Pharmacy, Surgery, and Ambulatory
  • Partners with pharmacy leaders to analyze financial performance of all drug categories (included but not limited to ambulatory, inpatient, specialty, cellular, gene)
  • Leads strategic initiatives that continuously improve operational effectiveness at KCI.
  • Partners with clinical and operational leaders to create high impact business cases linked to strategic financial growth and efficiencies.
  • Works closely with leadership, peers, physicians, staff, and joint venture partners proposing and/or planning for the implementation of new clinical initiatives for KCI, applying the latest financial analytic tools to:
    • Assess the viability and upside potential for new initiatives, and
    • Evaluates risk factors such as competition, reimbursement changes, staffing challenges, payor mix & patient mix changes, and/or changes in the regulatory framework that could adversely impact new programs
  • Ensures strong fidelity and integration of the physician recruitment plan and the KCI financial plan.
  • Provides support, as needed, for collective bargaining agreements

Financial Function Operational Effectiveness

  • Leads key initiatives that improve the overall effectiveness of the Finance function at KCI
  • Supports key initiatives that improve the overall effectiveness of the finance function
  • Follows established KCI and OHSU department policies, procedures, objectives, performance improvement, attendance, safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines, including adherence to the workplace Code of Conduct.
  • Practices a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics or related field with a current Oregon CPA license
  • Minimum of six (6) years’ experience in healthcare financial and operational leadership roles.  Experience in broad based delivery system preferred.
  • Ability to function in a fast paced and changing environment with multiple priorities and objectives.
  • Must be able to balance competing priorities and interests.  Advance knowledge of Microsoft Office (Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, Economics or a related field.
  • Familiarity with free standing cancer center or academic medical center settings, faculty practice plans, and research integration is highly desirable.

  • Vizient ODB, SQL, R, VBA
  • FACHE, FACMPE, HFMA certification, LEAN/Six-sigma Belt status

Additional Details

  • Position requires some travel from site to site throughout Oregon.
