Department Overview

The Department of Comparative Medicine provides for the health and welfare needs, care, and housing of research animals throughout the OHSU central and waterfront campuses, and supports research innovations of OHSU Investigators.

Function/Duties of Position

The Clinical Veterinary Technician 1 assists in providing clinical care, nursing support and husbandry for a variety of laboratory research animals.  This is the first level of a three-level series.  It is distinguished from the higher levels by reduced responsibility for performing complex animal care protocols and veterinary diagnostic and treatment procedures.  At this level there is an emphasis on animal health, anesthesia/surgery support, and training.  Greater supervision is provided.  It is distinguished from the Veterinary Research/Health Technician series by the emphasis on providing veterinary clinical care and nursing support of sick and/or injured animals.


Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid Oregon or Washington driver license
  • Requires 1 years experience caring for animals in a veterinary hospital or a laboratory animal facility including 6 months in a clinical position; AND state certification through the Veterinary Medical Examining Board as a Veterinary Technician; AND Certification by the American Association for Lab Animal Science at the Assistant Lab Animal Technician (ALAT) level, or ability to obtain this certification within 12 months of employment.


Preferred Qualifications

  • BS in Animal Sciences, Biology, or related field
  • Experience in the health care of experimental animals in a research setting
