Department Overview

The Department of Comparative Medicine provides for the health and welfare needs, care, and housing of research animals throughout the OHSU central and waterfront campuses, and supports research innovations of OHSU Investigators.

Function/Duties of Position

The Veterinary Surgical Technician 2 provides general technical and nursing support for the veterinary surgical program including surgical and equipment preparation, anesthesia monitoring, surgical assistance and post-operative patient care of veterinary patients within the animal care department. This classification is the second level of a three level series.  It is distinguished from the lower level by providing more technical support including anesthesia monitoring, nursing support, preparation of animals for surgery, dispensing of medications, performing surgical assistance to the research team. It is distinguished from the higher level by providing a less coordination of the surgical activities and the need for a higher level of supervision.  

Required Qualifications

  • 5 years of experience caring for animals in a veterinary hospital or laboratory animal facility including 2 years in a surgical setting OR equivalent combination of experience and training
  • State certification through the Veterinary Medical Examining Board as a Veterinary Technician
  • Certification or ability to obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science at the Laboratory Animal Technician level
  • Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Strong written and verbal abilities
  • Veterinary anesthesia, analgesia, peri-operative care
  • Dose calculation
  • Operating room maintenance and prep
  • Aseptic technique
  • Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds of varying educational levels
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED. Completion of an AVMA-accredited degree or certificate program in veterinary technology
  • Experience with swine, sheep or other agricultural species; ferrets, guinea pigs, or other exotic animals/pocket pets; mice, rats, canines, or other traditional laboratory animal species
  • Familiarity with animal welfare guidelines and regulations

Working conditions:

  1. Exposure to animals, animal tissue and fluids, and designated biohazards.
  2. Busy environment with constant interruptions, multiple demands, and interactions with people from diverse backgrounds of varying educational levels.
  3. Ability to work overtime and weekends.
  4. Ability to report to work early on occasion.

 

Physical demands & equipment usage:

  1. Ability to carry and lift up to 40 pounds.
  2. Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  3. Ability to sit at a computer for extended periods of time.
  4. Use of computers and multi-line telephones.
  5. Use of anesthesia machines, positive-pressure ventilators, and physiologic monitoring equipment
