Function/Duties of Position

We are seeking a talented, motivated and interactive individual to work as part of  a multidisciplinary team at the Pacific Northwest Center for Cryo-EM (PNCC) a joint collaboration between Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL).  The center includes four 300 KeV cryo Transmission EMs (TEM) and one 200 KeV cryoTEM.  Two of the 300 KeV cryoTEMs are outfitted with Falcon III, post GIF K3 and volta phase plate technologies. One with a post Biocontinuum GIF K3, finally, one with standalone DEDs (Falcon III and K3).  The center also has standard equipment for sample preparation and optimization including a Vitrojet that will be installed in Spring 2021.  PNCC is a national facility sponsored by NIH’s Transformative High Resolution Cryo-Electron Microscopy program. 

 

The successful candidate will assist under supervision in the day-to-day activities of the facility such as: basic laboratory responsibilities/duties with increase innovation and problem solving, tracking and storing samples shipped to the center, tracking and shipping dry shippers back to PNCC users, monitoring chillers and ancillary instruments on daily basis, and monitoring and exchanging LN2 tanks hooked up to the cryoTEMs. 

 

The candidate will be expected to help maintain a smooth and efficient working environment and assist other laboratory members on other wet-lab activities under supervision such as: preparation of solutions, buffers, keep record of chemicals, samples, and etc.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree (4 year) with major courses in field of research/ No experience.
  • AA (2 year) and 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Strong organization, analytical skills
  • Dependable, able to function effectively independently and as part of a team.
  • Self-motivated, proactive problem solver, seeks guidance when appropriate.
  • Detail oriented, able to prioritize and work well under deadlines Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)                 
  • Ability to multi-task efficiently and demonstrate good time management skills.
  • Well organized, attention to detail, dependable and work as a team member to accomplish research goals.
  • Excellent communication skills with strong ability to organize, documents.
  • Experience handling chemical materials.

Preferred Qualifications

  • EM experience
  • Demonstrated ability to handle delicate samples and instruments.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new and innovative procedures quickly.

Working conditions: This position is located at the Robertson Life Sciences Building.

 

Physical demands & equipment usage: Ability to work at a computer for up to 3 hours at a time. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and handling cryoEM samples. Ability to perform repetitive manual manipulations (gripping, grasping, fingering, pinching, typing, using a mouse, etc.). Ability to communicate complex ideas to customers and co-workers. Able to lift dry shippers (~30 lbs.) and small LN2 dewars (4L). Personal protective equipment must be worn as required. (Gloves, mask/respirator, eyewear, lab coat, etc). This position demands on site work on daily basis.
