The purpose of the Laboratory Animal Technician 1 is to provide husbandry, health care and research support for laboratory animals maintained at the Oregon National Primate Research Center. The area of work assignment and specific tasks will vary but will be focused on equipment sanitation, depending on animal population and care requirements, service requirements, and staffing needs. The LAT 1 is required to perform animal care and research support at the level that the individual is trained. The primary scope of work is specific to the Small Laboratory Animal Unit, but a successful LAT 1 may also be called upon to provide support to non-human primate units.

This position will work on a research project under the direction of Anjali Rameshbabu, Ph.D. This research is focused on communal meal breaks, an intervention to increase social connectedness among healthcare janitorial workers. The study will identify current practices and implementation needs, and include a test of feasibility. The research assistant will administer surveys to research participants, conduct interviews with participants and collect data, and assist with data analysis. This is a temporary, part-time (~12.5 hours per week) position that is funded through August 31, 2025.
This position will work on projects under the direction of Leslie B Hammer, Ph.D. Her current research is focused on the health and well-being of farmworkers, approximately 78% of which identify as Latine/Hispanic. The position is funded for two years through a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, with the possibility of extending beyond that time if additional funding is obtained. Dr. Hammer is leading a team to study the effects of a recent bill to provide overtime pay to agricultural workers, which had previously been denied to them.

Research Assistant for a Social Connectedness and Health project in which we examine how social leverage and network connectivity, along with biomarkers of health, may be altered by providing individuals control over a highly desired food resource. Under general supervision of PI, perform standardized behavioral observations to monitor and record social interactions between nonhuman primates living in outdoor group enclosures and evaluate levels of aggression, submission and affiliation. Use positive reinforcement techniques to help train nonhuman primates to participate in behavioral tasks. Assist in data analysis and report writing.
