This is an NIH grant funded position with Dr. Stuart Ibsen. We are developing an exciting new type of cancer diagnostic test that combines microfluidic and microarray technology to pull cancer-derived nanoparticles straight from plasma. Our long-term goal is to bring nanoparticle-based diagnostics to the clinic for the first time. We are currently hiring for 1-2 highly motivated and enthusiastic researchers with expertise in Engineering or Biology to work in some of the following general areas:   - Development of biological particle separation techniques using dielectrophoresis technology – using microelectrode array chips to recover cancer-derived nanoparticles from circulation (Gustafson, et al. 2021). This novel work will focus on the development and characterization of new nanoparticle recovery techniques using dielectrophoretic forces. These forces are created by microelectrode array devices that act on the unique dielectric properties of different particles (Ibsen et al. 2017). This work includes increasing particle collection efficiency, understanding the types of particles that are collected and how they can be separated, and developing an internal standard appropriate for different particle types. This position will utilize the high-end specialized dielectrophoresis equipment located here at OHSU. This will also involve quantitative fluorescent microscopy imaging, TEM imaging, immunostaining, and particle characterization. - System automation– continuing development and finalization of an automated system to conduct the dielectrophoresis work. The goal is to automate the dielectrophoresis collection protocol to increase sample analysis throughput. This will involve basic robotics and automation programming in LabView. - Cancer biomarker panel development– evaluate the nanoparticle associated biomarkers that are collected for their ability to detect pancreatic cancer from plasma samples. Here the goal is to use the developed dielectrophoresis techniques to collect cancer-derived nanoparticles and evaluate their biomarkers for the ability to detect pancreatic cancer.   Selected References: - Luna, Ramona; Heineck, Daniel; Hinestrosa, Juan Pablo; Dobrovolskaia, Irina; Hamilton, Sean; Malakian, Anna; Gustafson, Kyle T.; Huynh, Katherine T.; Kim, Sejung; Ware, Jason; Stimson, Ella; Ross, Christian; Schutt, Carolyn E.; Ibsen, Stuart. “Enhancement of Dielectrophoresis-Based Particle Collection from High Conducting Fluids Due to Partial Electrode Insulation.” Electrophoresis, In Press (2023) - Hamilton, Sean; Shea, Delaney; Ibsen, Stuart*, Brasino, Michael*. We are a large nonhuman primate (NHP) research program at the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute (VGTI) focused on - the collaborative development of cytomegalovirus (CMV)-based vaccine vectors for prevention and treatment of infectious and neoplastic diseases of global importance, including (in rough order of emphasis) HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, Hepatitis B, influenza and prostate cancer, and - the development of novel approaches (both vaccine and nonvaccine) to cure established HIV/SIV infection.   To facilitate our goals the research group is comprised of faculty level Program Managers as well as an Administrative Support Group which includes a Laboratory Manager, Project Administrator (budget and compliance) and support staff for administrative duties, supply, procurement, reagent and inventory management, as well as a dedicated Flow Cytometry Group which supports the research focuses described below. Of note, our group interacts on a daily basis with the NHP Pathology Lab and the Infectious Disease Resource (IDR), and closely collaborates with other VGTI labs. Vaccine Development Program (Prevention) – The primary goal of this group is to continue to improve, understand and characterize recombinant CMV vectors for clinical translation. To accomplish this goal, the group is comprised of three primary Focus Groups including: - pre-clinical vaccine development and efficacy using the NHP model, - CMV immunobiology using molecular techniques, and - clinical translation.   Each Focus Group is led by a senior technician (Focus Supervisor). Focus Supervisors are supported by Focus Leads that assist in coordinating daily operations and management of technical staff (Research Assistants). HIV Latency Disruption and Immunotherapy Program (Cure) – The focus of this group has been to delineate the mechanisms of SIV pathogenesis in the rhesus macaque model and to understand the cellular and immunological factors that contribute to viral persistence during conditions of optimal immunologic or pharmacologic control.   Building on these discoveries, this group has expanded their efforts to include the development and testing of novel therapeutic strategies aimed at achieving eradicative cure or long-term remission from HIV/SIV replication after treatment interruption.  Therefore, the primary goal of this group is to continue to develop novel strategies aimed at eliminating latently-infected cells with the goal of facilitating remission from HIV/SIV replication after cART cessation. To accomplish this goal, his laboratory is comprised of two primary Focus Groups including: - HIV latency disruption and - HIV Immunotherapy.   Both groups are managed by a Focus Supervisor and supported by technical staff. Technical staff (Research Assistants) within all Focus groups will be expected to carry out the science associated with various projects and provide the technical support required to meet the program’s research objectives. Technical staff are expected to function independently or as part of a team to ensure all project goals are met. All staff are expected to carry out daily activities of the laboratory, including but not limited to: maintain detailed documentation of the experimental work (digital and physical records); ensure quality control of equipment, reagents and cellular material; work closely with lab members and with outside collaborators; perform and assist with experiments involving cell isolation, immunologic assays, microscopy, flow cytometry, and molecular biology; and maintain close communication with a supervisor regarding progress. The position will involve handling and processing human and non-human primate samples that may contain infectious agents.   Additional duties include, but are not limited to the following: - Under minimal supervision, sets up and performs various research procedures in support of research goals and grant commitments. - May lead one or more phases of a research project. - Performs work of moderate to complex difficulty. - May contribute to the planning, design, manuscript writing, grant or regulatory documentations, modification of studies and experiments. - With supervision, may interact with external research sponsors. - May oversee and assist with the training of junior staff. - Communicate with senior personnel regarding daily priorities (facilitate which assays take priority, if applicable). - Report equipment/supply needs or failures. - Monitor morning and evening checklists (ensuring the checklists are complete each day, updating them as new tasks inevitably arise). - Streamline daily workflow (and receive suggestions for improvements). - Complete all assigned trainings.  - Perform additional duties as assigned.

We are expanding our general radiology services as part of the Community Division of OHSU at Hillsboro Medical Center. The ideal candidate will be MSK fellowship trained (although not required). Although general radiology coverage is expected, we are looking to complement our sub-specialty trained team, which includes Neuro, Body and Cardiothoracic imaging trained radiologists. Candidates should be comfortable reading all radiology modalities, including CT, US, and MRI as well as some mammography and PET scans; more specialized modality cases are typically read by the respective sub-specialty trained members of the practice. Light general radiology procedures are also performed, such as CT- and ultrasound-guided drainages/biopsies, arthrograms/joint injections, and breast biopsies. A separate IR service covers more specialized interventional procedures. Case mix is representative of a suburban community-based radiology practice. We are a shift-based practice with mostly 4-day work weeks (when fully staffed, 1-2 non-clinical days will be typical). All shift types are equally and equitably distributed across partners. Hours are generally 8 am to 4:30 pm with overnight nighthawk coverage from 6 pm to 8 am. Call is one in five with week-day call shift from 8 am to 6 pm and weekend call shifts also from 8 am to 6 pm. Additionally, we provide home workstations to allow for teleworking or “work from home” options on weekday and week-end call shifts if desired. The team covers one hospital and one imaging center in Hillsboro, Oregon. The position offers equal salary and vacation time with partners, starting from day 1 with a starting salary of $470K. OHSU provides a competitive salary and sign-on bonus, relocation reimbursement, and an extensive benefits package including generous retirement benefits. Shifts can be exchanged with other team members, and if desired, there are opportunities for additional shifts with commensurate compensation based on salary. OHSU also offers a generous CME allowance and institutionally provides a supportive environment if there is a desire to learn or develop new clinical skillsets or programs.
