The position will work with the Orthopaedic physicians to provide support and coordinate patient care. Overall responsibilities include accountability for planning, coordination, and delivery of clinical services within the Adventist Health Portland Orthopaedics clinic. The position provides leadership and guidance in the area of outpatient care and clinical support operations, with some potential for inpatient activity. Works in conjunction with the Department Chairman, Vice-Chair, Department Administrator, and Service Line Medical Directors to provide services to further the University’s mission and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service and the Department’s/Hospital’s goal of providing effective, efficient care. Provides clinical modeling and education to departmental staff and house staff as outlined.
The APP delivers preventive, primary and acute healthcare services to individuals of all ages; provides advanced education to students, peers and others; and contributes to new knowledge with the option of participating in research activities. This position will be providing clinical support for multiple locations, including our main campus and off-site clinic locations. Surgical first assist support and some inpatient rounding and discharge will be provided at our partner site, Adventist Health Portland.
Clinical Responsibilities:
- Independently evaluates new patients in the clinic and follow-up visits with physician oversight and monitoring as needed.
- Developing patient care plans to ensure continuity of care and enhance quality of orthopedic outpatient care.
- Performs preoperative evaluations for orthopedic procedures.
- Manage health care and wound care during acute and chronic phases of treatment.
- Coordinate ancillary services, such as radiology; Promote and maintain health through the use of ancillary services, educational materials and counseling of patients and families.
- Document plan of care in medical record (EMR).
- Daily updates to referring providers by phone, e-mail, and fax.
- Resource to inpatient nursing and rehabilitation staff and providers with regard to orthopedic patient care.
- Responds to prescription refills and refill/justification for durable medical equipment.
- Track laboratory results, culture results and arrange for initiation of treatment or changes in treatment.
- Place hospital pre-procedure orders.
- Manages pre-operative medical clearance evaluations and follow- up on recommendations.
- Provide ED call coverage services such as after hours floor call from the inpatient unit and after hours/weekend first assist coverage.
Other clinical duties include, but is not limited to: surgical assist in the OR as needed; developing and implementing, in conjunction with faculty physicians, clinical plans of care and/or protocols for orthopedic inpatients with common conditions/diagnoses/procedures; educating the housestaff and nursing unit staff on these protocols if requested by provider, with the goal of enhancing quality of care, enhancing quality of patient service, and decreasing length of inpatient stay when needed; participating with hospital/unit staff in evaluating results of these protocols and continually improving effectiveness; working actively with hospital and unit staff to rapidly develop and implement discharge plans for orthopedic inpatients and to address any length of stay issues.
Patient Education:
Utilizing an interdisciplinary approach in patient education in the outpatient and inpatient settings. This patient education consists of, but not limited to:
1. Multi-disciplinary orthopedic screening, diagnosis, disease process and medical management.
2. Preprocedural preparation and post-procedural care.
3. Working with Nursing Education to develop, approve, and distribute patient education materials.
Education: Support OHSU’s academic missions by participating in the design, development and assessment of program curriculum for professional specialty area; including course objectives, instructional methods, learning outcomes, projects and assessment measures. Teach program courses as needed according to specified learning outcomes; academic advising and career related counseling for students; monitoring student retention and identifying and assisting at-risk students. May serve as the faculty of record and principle contact for extern placements and student’s performance at the assigned site.
Participates in ongoing education of staff including but not limited to: Organization of inservices for pertinent clinical population, inservice training for identified procedures, and issues regarding quality patient care. Participates in the education of medical, nursing and physician assistant students and residents by participation in conferences and on the job teaching in the inpatient and outpatient settings.
Scholarship: Support OHSU’s research and scholarship missions by participating in the development and implementation of research projects. This may include but is not limited to obtaining patient reported outcomes during clinical care, treating patients involved in research studies, obtaining consent, and facilitating protocols. Clinical Supervision: Deliver individual instruction to support fellows, residents and other clinical learners to support their personal program of learning in the applicable specialty area. DCH inter-operative staff work as integral part of an interdisciplinary care team to provide individualized family centered care for the pediatric and adult congenital patients in the perioperative setting. Searching for either a TI Clinical Research Associate OR TI Senior Clinical Research Assistant that may be involved in all facets of clinical research, from initial clinical trial development through trial closure and project completion. Clinical research conducted within the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (PHO) includes cooperative group (National Cancer Institute [NCI] or consortia sponsored), pharmaceutical (industrial sponsored), and local investigator initiated clinical trials. This position requires independent performance of assignments of significant complexity. This position works with people at all levels of the organization and interacts with numerous internal OHSU departments and external customers (sponsors, monitors, referring physician offices). The PBM Technician provides technical support to licensed pharmacists within OHSU Pharmacy Benefit Management Services. Support includes but is not limited to troubleshooting pharmacy claims, responding to non-clinical inquiries, providing call center support, implementing formulary changes, and providing utilization management support.
The position’s primary function is to lead the development and presentation of evidence synthesis research products such as systematic reviews, health technology assessments, and rapid reviews. The Center’s evidence synthesis research is focused on the areas of health technologies, pharmaceuticals and health services, with attention toward their applicability to Medicaid and other state health programs.

This position is under the administration of the Director of the IDD and the supervision of the Clinical Director of the Child Development and Rehabilitation Center (CDRC) clinical programs. The duties of this position are in support of the missions, goals and objectives of OHSU and IDD and include: participation in interdisciplinary teams for the evaluation and management of children and adolescents with special health care needs in selected CDRC clinics throughout the state; participation in interdisciplinary training at CDRC; service on various CDRC and OHSU committees as appropriate and assigned; engagement in public service through consultative activities with non-OHSU groups as approved by the Director; and conduct of research in selected areas of interest. The duties may vary and are determined by the CDRC Clinical Director to meet objectives agreed upon by the Director of the IDD in consultation with the CDRC Clinical Director.
This position supports and participates in monitoring and evaluating quality assessment and improvement of patient care provided at CDRC as part of the annual reappraisal of the CDRC program.

The inpatient APP will be responsible for providing excellent clinical care for patients admitted to the adult cardiology service while working in conjunction with faculty physicians and/or cardiology fellows. Patient population consists of adult general cardiology and adult congenital heart disease patients including the following problems: ACS, heart failure, valvular disorders, arrhythmias, amyloidosis, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, etc. Duties include but are not limited to:
- Admitting/discharging patients
- Rounding with the attending physician (may be a combination of formal rounds and abbreviated rounds)
- Writing of daily notes and orders
- Coordinating with consulting teams and procedural staff as needed
- Working closely with nurses, pharmacy staff, case managers and social workers to ensure safe and effective medical management and discharge planning.
The inpatient APP will be expected to participate in teaching internal medicine residents, PA students, NP students who may be rotating on the cardiology service. There will be opportunities to attend and participate in relevant educational conferences, quality improvement projects, and operations & management of the APP service.
Typical schedule consists of three 12-hour shifts per week 7:00pm to 7:00am, plus additional time for administrative duties.

The primary function of this position is to provide inpatient direct clinical care in the inpatient setting to geriatric patients on an as needed basis. This position is located at a newly redesigned Geriatric Psychiatry Clinic at Tuality Hospital in Hillsboro, an OHSU partner.
Included in those duties are to supervise fellows and residents in the clinical care of geriatric psychiatry patients.
Centralized Managed Care and Insurance Verification
- Review incoming referral orders to assess patient’s needs based on diagnosis, insurance coverage or lack thereof, and previous treatments. Referrals may be received internally via Epic or externally via fax or other methods.
- Verify patient information including demographics, insurance coverage and financial status. Confirm patient eligibility for health care coverage and clarify any managed care arrangements. Document any details related to liability insurance (i.e. motor vehicle accident, personal injury, or worker’s compensation) to determine third party liability.
- Obtains benefit information including current eligibility, deductible or co-pays, co-insurance, stoploss or out of pocket status, authorization requirements, PCP referral requirements, days approved (for routine admissions), and correct billing address.
- Document information based on department protocols in the Epic Referral shell.
- Work closely with referring providers to obtain necessary insurance referrals and authorizations.
- For urgent/emergent admissions, provides admit information and sets up authorizations and/or PCP referrals. Contacts care-management to provide clinical review and obtain length of stay.
- For routine admissions, confirms that the authorizations and/or PCP referrals cover the designated admission. If authorizations and/or PCP referrals are not noted in the system, contacts the Managed Care Coordinator from specialist’s office requesting the admission for follow up with the designated insurance company.
- Send notification of admission for urgent admissions.
- When appropriate, obtain authorizations for all clinical care, procedures, diagnostic studies, medications, outpatient infusion treatment, and inpatient admissions including notifying insurance upon admission.
- Follow up on all pending authorizations and/or PCP referrals until accounts are secured.
- Maintains current information on managed care insurance plans and serves as a liaison and information resource for patients, referring physician offices, and other OHSU staff. Applies problem solving and negotiating skills in resolving patient concerns and managed care related issues.
- Collects detailed information of trauma admissions (motor vehicle accident, personal injury, and/or worker’s compensation) to determine accident-related liability.
- Appropriately codes insurance plans in EPIC system for billing purposes.
- Work directly with insurance companies, the denial coordinator and the clinical staff and/or provider to supply necessary information to appeal denied claims and/or authorization requests as applicable

- Complete necessary forms prior to upcoming procedures, admissions, and/or appointments (i.e. Non-Covered Charges Form (NCCF), Advanced Beneficiary Notification (ABN) or Patient Financial Estimate (FE)) as required.
- Work directly with the patients and clinical team to ensure patient is knowledgeable and understands their insurance benefits and/or financial obligations.
Patient Liability Estimates
- Review work queue for patients that need an estimate created.
- Document information based on department protocols in the Epic referral shell.
- Create a Patient Liability Estimate.
- Complete accurate pre-registration via phone as applicable.
- Contact the patient prior to service to inform them of their estimate and collect any pre-payments at that time.
Customer Service

This position will provide patient care in a care team model in the Adult Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU). The appointee works in partnership with faculty physicians, fellows, residents, students and other APPs to provide excellent clinical care and customer services to critically ill patients with cardiac and vascular disease, as well as several surgical subspecialties. This position works cooperatively with nursing staff to provide education, continuity, and quality improvement initiatives.
Rounds on patients in the CVICU on a daily basis with the ICU team; develops and implements, in conjunction with faculty physicians, clinical plans of care and/or protocols for patients with common conditions/diagnoses/procedures; educates house staff and nursing unit staff on these protocols, with the goal of enhancing quality of care, enhancing quality of patient services, and accelerating patient recovery; participates with hospital/unit staff in evaluating results of these protocols and continually improving effectiveness of same; works actively with hospital and unit staff to rapidly develop and implement discharge plans for patients in the CVICU and to address length of stay issues; promotes health of patients in the CVICU through the use of ancillary services, educational materials, and counseling of patients and families. Supports team members and endeavors to create a safe and welcoming environment where all can contribute and prosper. In order to foster better cross-team communication, participates in an interdisciplinary committee as a representative of the CVICU. Engages in quality improvement projects for the CVICU.
