A Research Assistant 2 position is available to conduct innovative research on the immunology and virology of HIV infection in Dr. Okoye’s Laboratory at the Vaccine & Gene Therapy Institute (VGTI) using the non-human primate (NHP) model. This position will assist on projects focused on better understanding the pathogenesis of HIV/AIDS, developing HIV vaccines and novel HIV cure therapies.
Under the general supervision of senior staff, the technical staff of this group carries out the daily needs of ongoing experiments, including:
- Experimental tasks associated with processing of rhesus macaque samples for immunological and virological assays. These include cell isolation from blood and other tissues, cell culture, in vitro virus infection, etc.
- Experimental tasks associated with flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry, including: antibody staining, flow cytometry and data acquisition.
- Data analysis, careful record-keeping, compilation, analysis and reporting of data.
- Additional responsibilities contributing to the maintenance of lab operations, as assigned.

- Performs testing in all sections of the Core Laboratory with accuracy, speed, and efficiency, using Sysmex XN, ABL, Vista 1500, Centaur, Iris, and Stago instrumentation. Follows written procedures and policies.
- Prepares samples for testing. Determines acceptability of specimens and results. Repeats analysis as necessary to insure accuracy. Reports test results via computer and telephone.
- Performs all computer functions using EPIC LIS and HIS software.

INSTRUMENT PROCESSING: Performs testing in all sections of OHSU Community Oncology Laboratory with accuracy, speed and efficiency using Sysmex XT 4000, Sysmex 1000, Beckman Coulter AU480, Beckman Coulter Access, Abbott Piccolo Express, Microscope. Follows all written procedures, policies and guidelines.
SAMPLE PREPARATION: Prepares patient samples for testing. Determines acceptability of specimens and results. Repeats specimen testing as necessary to insure accuracy. Reports results via computer and phone.
RESULT VALIDATION: Ensures all patient data, both internal and send out testing, is received and documented in the patient Electronic Medical Record (EMR). Recognizes Critical Value results and immediately responds by notifying the appropriate provider.
INSTRUMENT MAINTENANCE: Calibrates and performs routine maintenance on analytic analyzers. Uses problem solving skills to troubleshoot when indicated by patient or quality control results.
COMPUTER SKILLS: Performs required work using computer programs: EPIC, Word, Excel, Portal, E-chart and basic navigation of Community Hematology Oncology computer files.
QUALITY CONTROL: Performs all quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) tasks. This includes, but is not limited to: daily analyzer controls, instrument function checks, Proficiency Testing, documentation of QA issues involving both patients and/or instrument problems. Reports all QC and/or QA problems to the Laboratory Manager in a timely manner.
INVENTORY / SUPPLIES: Maintains adequate laboratory supplies by performing regular stock inventories and processing supply orders as needed. Maintains a clean environment within the laboratory.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITES:
- Completes competency training and annual review of policies and procedure manuals in a timely manner. Complies with Safety policies/processes and HIPAA regulations.

- Plan, perform and run independent experiments and help supervise other projects running in the laboratory.
Run the lab’s operation in the absence of the PI, a minimum of one day per week when PI is in clinic, and as needed.
Maintain the lab’s frozen cell lines and supervise all tissue culture in the lab.
Maintain, organize, and distribute all the lab’s plasmids and constructs for all of the ongoing projects in the lab.
Maintain the data of other users in the lab and ensure all data is backed up. Will be in charge of the lab servers/programs for data analysis.
Participate in the establishment and oversight of standardized protocols for training, equipment use and procedures, data collection and analysis methods.
Manage and use computer software to input, manage and distribute data for future analysis.
Maintain detailed lab records.
- Maintain laboratory compliance documentation for human, animal, biological and radiological work.
Be familiar with lab safety infrastructure and ensure compliance with all safety regulations.
Interact with biosafety, chemical safety, and safety officers on behalf of the Principal Investigator.
- Generate data and research analysis for investigator's use in preparation of technical reports and publications.
Assist the PI with manuscript preparation and grant applications.
Present, or assist in the presentation of, research projects at retreats, seminars, conferences and other OHSU or public venues.
- Providing training to users on lab practices and protocols, including sample preparation and instrumentation use.
- Maintain an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook of all experiments performed. Participate in lab meeting.
- Training of lab personnel and supervision of Research Assistants, students and other lab members.
- Perform routine lab operations, including but not limited to the purchase of laboratory supplies, monitoring supplies and maintaining all laboratory equipment.

These studies will include a variety of technical approaches including: cell culture, cell imaging, immunohistochemical, tissue scanning and evaluation, antibody validation, computational analyses.
- Sample collection and processing. Interaction with clinical staff to facilitate identification and collection of samples. Possible consenting of patients onto IRB approved protocol.
- Perform data analyses and entry and maintain data files on research projects utilizing various platforms (Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, RedCap, caTissue, ClinPortal, and others).
- Immunohistochemical analyses, cell culture.
- General Lab maintenance, including preparation of buffers and stocks, cleaning and organizing dishware, and racking and autoclaving tips/tubes.

The schedule will be full time, including evenings and weekends as needed for experiments. Exposure as part of this position may include toxic chemicals and drugs, human tissues and fluids, and small animal work (mice) including tissue preparation, depending on the experiments performed.

The duties of this position include: The Physician/surgeon is expected to actively participate in the education, research, patient care and administrative programs of the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation, with an emphasis on foot and ankle surgery and general orthopaedics. The position actively participates in all aspects of the clinical care of patients as outlined by the Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation.
As a member of the Department of Orthopaedics responsibilities and duties are outlined as follows:
- The Department Chair and clinical director will work with you to develop your clinical and operative schedule. Your duties will include inpatient, outpatient and surgical service activities for general orthopedic surgical services at Adventist Health Portland, with a specialty focus in your area of interest as agreed with the Department Chair. - Education. Since OHSU is a teaching facility, teaching medical students and residents in the clinical setting as well as through assigned lectures to be given during the course of the year is required. Teaching assignments will be given from the Director of Education.

The duties of this position include:
- Clinical Activities (not related to teaching or research):
- Assessing and managing patients
- Collaborate with other members of the team to communicate with and transition care back to the patient’s PCP and DC patients in a timely manner.
- Ordering appropriate diagnostic studies and laboratory tests to aid in the diagnosis of known or suspected injuries or illnesses.

This level 3 coding position provides support to the Enterprise Coding Department for the coding of Inpatient services. The Inpatient Coder position requires certification and active credential status with AHIMA and advanced coding experience in the highly specialized areas of Inpatient coding.
- Inpatient Coding Services: This position is responsible for reviewing clinical documentation and assigning the correct ICD 10 CM and ICD 10 PCS coding to Inpatient records.
- Utilizes Epic and 3M 360 systems
- Effectively communicates via email.
- Collaborates with Coding Leads, Clinical Documentation Specialists and Billing Dept to ensure correct coding and DRG assignment resulting in accurate Case Mix Index calculations and reimbursement.

Emergency Medicine
The duties of this position include: Assisting with staffing the Emergency Department (including the ED observation unit and Pediatric Emergency Services / Minor Care Clinic) as assigned by the Chair; functioning as an (Emergency Medicine) observation unit attending; participation in education of medical and paramedic students, house staff and nurses; participating in Emergency Department quality assurance activities; and provision of on-line medical consultation.
Critical Care Medicine
The duties of this position include:
- Clinical: Provision of inpatient or outpatient clinical duties in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, as assigned by the Division Chief.
- Administrative, Educational, and Academic: Specific administrative responsibilities may be assigned by Section Chief or Chair as needed. Educational responsibilities include meeting the general expectation related to the Fellowship and Resident rotations when on call, presenting at and otherwise participating in division grand rounds and other conferences. May be assigned to a PCCM fellow as a mentor. Will participate in fellowship recruitment. Further administrative and educational responsibilities will be developed in conjunction with the division chief.
- Allow students to learn technique for performing the urogenital exam, including external and internal inspection and palpation. Urological exam procedures to include palpation for lymph nodes, hernias, and examination of the scrotum, testicles, penis, and rectum (prostate), and breast / chest. MUTAs will guide the student through the learning process while each learner performs the urologic exam on the MUTA’s body.
- Provide learners feedback on proper integrated technique for sensitive interactive communication and relaxation before, during, and after the physical examination.
- Provide support and feedback to learners, to maximize the learning experience and build learner confidence.

- Allow students to learn proper technique for performing the pelvic exam, including external and internal inspection and palpation. Gynecological exam procedures to include palpation for lymph nodes, vaginal speculum exam, bi-manual exam, recto-vaginal exam. GTAs will guide the student through the learning process while each learner performs the pelvic exam on the GTA body.
