We are developing an exciting new type of cancer diagnostic test that combines microfluidic and microarray technology to pull cancer-derived nanoparticles straight from plasma. Our long-term goal is to bring nanoparticle-based diagnostics to the clinic for the first time. We are currently hiring for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Research Assistant 2 or Senior Research Assistant.   We are looking for applicants with expertise in Engineering or Biology to work in some of the following general areas: - Development of biological particle separation techniques using dielectrophoresis technology – Using microelectrode array chips to recover cancer-derived nanoparticles from circulation (Gustafson, et al. 2021). This novel work will focus on the development and characterization of new nanoparticle recovery techniques using dielectrophoretic forces. These forces are created by microelectrode array devices that act on the unique dielectric properties of different particles (Ibsen et al. 2017). This work includes increasing particle collection efficiency, understanding the types of particles that are collected and how they can be separated, and developing an internal standard appropriate for different particle types. This position will utilize the high-end specialized dielectrophoresis equipment located here at OHSU. We are looking for a Research Assistant 2 to join the Papé Family Pediatric Research Institute, Neuroscience Section. Our research focuses on the effects of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and sleep on the developing brain. We use imaging (MRI) and different sleep measurements to understand how waste is eliminated from the brain in normal individuals, and in those who suffered from TBI.    The person joining the lab will be tasked with study data entry and analysis, assisting with multiple study-related events (recruitment, consenting, appointments, etc.), and helping with other general lab duties.

Research Assistant 1 -OR- Research Assistant 2   We are looking for a candidate (1.0 FTE) to join our research team who is about to complete their undergraduate degree or is a recent graduate. This position is ideal for a candidate seeking to gain more experience relevant to human physiology, because the project involves work not only with a neonatal rodent model of brain hypoxia, but also with a large animal model of fetal brain hypoxia in pregnant sheep. These projects will provide excellent experience to launch a career in biomedical sciences as a physician scientist, a biomedical researcher or as preparation for medical school. The projects require a mature individual with excellent time management skills who will work intermittently for about half the year in an active sheep laboratory.  The remainder of time will be spent on projects focused on neonatal rodent studies.  Both projects are focused on complementary questions related to the impact of exposure to hypoxia on brain development. Both of these NIH-funded research projects will define mechanisms leading to disruption of neuronal development and disturbances in long-term learning and memory mechanisms.  The candidate will work with our chief sheep surgeon and must be comfortable with handling animals (mice and sheep) and providing surgical support in a large animal surgery suite with a sterile operating room. Prior small or large animal surgical experience is ideal but not required and training will be provided by faculty working in the sheep and rodent labs.   The projects will employ a range of approaches ranging from histology to advanced molecular approaches including single nucleus RNAseq.  These include analysis of neuronal morphology using advanced microscopic approaches for single cell reconstruction, electrophysiology, advanced MRI analysis and behavioral studies.  Some studies are on-going under the supervision of postdoctoral fellows or junior faculty in the lab. The candidate will work closely with these senior individuals on independent aspects of the rodent and sheep hypoxia studies. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to learn a range of techniques that we routinely use including animal surgery, tissue sectioning/staining for quantitative analysis, western blotting and other molecular techniques. Highly productive behavioral neuroscience laboratories seek a full-time Research Engineer to oversee the custom construction and maintenance of hardware necessary to implement state-of-the-art in vivo electrophysiology recordings in non-human primates and operant behavioral experimental designs; to configuring and install hardware and other data acquisition equipment; to program complex operant behavioral and data acquisition using National Instruments Labview, Python or other programming platforms on both Macintosh and Windows based data acquisition systems; to perform sound and video editing as needed for experimental collected media; to provide database design, maintenance, input and data analysis; to provide data mining, statistical analysis and reporting of analysis in publication-ready formats and to consult with outside engineering partners on new modes of research.   Key Responsibilities & Performance Standards   - Data Acquisition:  Design behavioral instrumentation to interface with computer controlled acquisition of real-time ingestive and physiological data from non-human monkeys.  The position requires custom software development to the flexible to changing protocols and scientific aims. The Knight Cancer Precision Biofabrication Hub at the Cancer Early Detection Advanced Research Center (CEDAR), is recruiting for a Research Assistant 1 who can provide a full range of support in the research laboratory, with minimal supervision. Must be able to work effectively with team members, and independently solve problems. The position will focus on technical assistance in support of several projects including (but not limited to): maintaining and expanding cell cultures from cell lines and primary cells, immunofluorescence staining, hydrogel preparation, laboratory maintenance, ordering and inventorying laboratory supplies.   A strong preference will be given to applicants with knowledge of biomaterials, tissue engineering, and cancer research. Past experience with organoids, bioprinting, or Organs on-a-chip are a plus. The ideal candidate will have a degree in biomedical engineering, biomaterials or stem cell research, a record of publications, a proven record of independence, and a background in tissue engineering.
