Provides direct and indirect care to patients undergoing procedures in the Cardiac Non Invasive Services Department and other areas in the hospital
- Performs transthoracic echocardiograms, stress echocardiograms, and transesophageal echocardiograms
- Assesses and prepares patients for procedures
- Conducts testing under the indirect supervision of a cardiologist
- Positions patient to maximize effectiveness of image and minimize patient discomfort
- Adjusts equipment controls and modifies images during the exam to demonstrate anatomy, physiology, hemodynamics, and/or pathology accurately
- Determines need for additional views based on patient variables or encountered pathology
- Records images for review by cardiologist
- Provides measurements, estimates, angles, and guidance as needed during certain procedures including, but not limited to, pericardiocentisis, transesophageal echocardiogram, and alcohol septal ablation
- Selects appropriate scan based on functional and/or anatomical pathology
- Utilizes ultrasound and contrast agents to view cardiac structures and wall motion/perfusion
- Monitors patients and their response
- Reports pertinent findings to cardiologist
- Arranges images of exam findings for patient’s medical record
- Documents according to established policies and procedures
- Demonstrates ongoing proficiency in clinical skills/knowledge specific to specialty area
- Demonstrates practice consistent with current research/standards/policies/protocols/procedures
- Protects patient privacy/maintains confidentiality
- Inserts and manages intravenous lines
- Recognizes and responds to adverse reactions, clinical problems, or emergent situations
- Provides teaching to patient and family as necessary
- Performs routine cleaning and reports mechanical failure of equipment
Ensures emergency equipment is maintained and working properly
- Demonstrates fiscally responsible resource utilization and promotes cost containment
- Follows research protocols
- Performs patient care in a timely manner

- Participates in orientation of new employees

- Plans, prepares, and presents training for departmental employees

IMAGING
- Provides quality real time 2D, 3D, M Mode and doppler applications to acquire images with accuracy and efficiency, using optimal skills and knowledge of equipment.
- Documents and demonstrates knowledge and skill to evaluate normal /abnormal anatomy and any related pathologies for presentation to Radiologist.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skill in ultrasound physics.
- Exercises responsible judgment in recognizing and reporting significant situations relating to patient care.
- Performs portable procedures when needed.
- Prepares and instructs the patient for the diagnostic study using age appropriate communication skills.
- Optimizes each image during the examination to obtain the highest quality study with the least discomfort to the patient.
- Must be able to perform all ranges of exams after completion of technical competencies.
- Assists the physician in invasive and/or specialized procedures, such as amniocentesis, needle biopsy, localizations, and tumor masses, as directed.
- Continues to stay current in regards to new US technology hardware and software upgrades.
DOCUMENTATION
- Verifies complete documentation of all pertinent information to provide accurate and timely service to customers.
- Verifies and initials orders in patient chart, Responsible for correctly identify patients by complying with Imaging dept. Patient Identification Policy.
- Labels images completely with patient demographics, position or other required documentation.
- Follows through with all aspects of scanning duties in order to provide efficient and timely completion of examinations with correct data entry, begin and complete with correct billing and verification that images are in PACS.
PERSONAL & PATIENT CARE & SAFETY
- Provides for personal and patient care and safety using professional judgement in accordance with written standards to avoid injury to self and others.
- Responsible to adhere to all established JCAHO National Patient Safety Goals, and report errors or unsafe conditions to supervisor and the OHSU Event Reporting (Patient Safety Net).
- Follows universal precautions for blood and body fluids, protecting patients and staff.
- Works in a safe manner by maintaining a clean work environment.
- Identifies and reports any issues for ergonomic improvement to supervisor.
Reports injuries to supervisor.
Echo Procedures.
- Determines and instructs patient in proper preparation for exam; explains examination process and procedure to patient; positions patient for each examination to maximize effectiveness of image and minimize patient discomfort; adjusts equipment controls; modifies each study during the exam to demonstrate the anatomy, physiology, hemodynamics and/or pathology accurately; determines need for additional views depending on patient variables or demonstrated pathology; manipulates transthoracic transducer by hand over diagnostic area in order to image cardiac structures and visualize hemodynamic flow patterns as necessary; selects appropriate scan based on significant functional and/or anatomical pathology; records representative images for review by Cardiologist. Performs transthoracic echocardiography on pediatric patients to include the evaluation of complex congenital heart lesions, and pre/post-operative cardiac assessment; to include premature and micro-premature infants on high frequency ventilators.
- Provides transthoracic echocardiography on outreach pediatric patients throughout Oregon. During certain invasive procedures, gives physician measurements, estimations, angles, and guidance. (These invasive procedures may include but not limited to; pericardial centesis, balloon atrial septostomy, blade atrial septostomy, balloon valvuloplasty. Assists physician in the application of transesophageal and/or intra vascular ultrasound in the cardiac catheterization laboratory or surgical suites.
Records and Reports.
- Schedules patients from phone or written physicians’ request; obtains clinical data from patient chart or referring physician; arranges digital images of exam findings in logical sequence for patient's permanent medical record; maintains patient files (e.g., records patient identification and corresponding examination procedures); verbally reports summary of patient's medical history and pertinent exam findings to Cardiologist.
Miscellaneous.
- Demonstrates echocardiography techniques and principles to assist students and Cardiology Fellows in performing the echocardiography exam; processes images in digital format; performs routine cleaning and adjustments on machines and reports any mechanical failures to supervisor; utilizes hazardous cleaning/sanitizing chemicals for esophageal probe; utilizes computer/ultrasound machine data for additional analysis; performs periodic quality control tests to ensure proper operation of equipment; keeps abreast of new techniques and technological changes by attending workshops and seminars. Follows and utilizes research protocols.
