We are seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented Senior Research Assistant to support CEDAR’s Specimen and Data Repository by aiding in the collection, transport, processing, and storage of biological samples and data.These samples will be a resource for researchers within CEDAR to support the innovation of new early detection technologies.
This position requires communication with clinical staff, transport of clinical samples, processing of multiple sample types, and proper storage of these samples. This position also involves patient medical chart review, clinical data annotation, accessioning and querying of data using the laboratory information management system. Detailed documentation skills and attention to detail to follow CEDAR processing protocols are key to ensuring that all samples are collected and stored in a consistent manner. Most samples will be collected and processed during regular business hours, but flexible scheduling is necessary since there may be instances where a sample arrives early or late and must be processed.
Duties Include:
- Processes a variety of samples that may include blood, tissue, urine, stool and saliva strictly according to CEDAR protocols. Enters specimens into long term storage; organizes and maintains repository freezers and ensures accurate lab documentation
- Acts as a project backup – must be able to fill in for multiple project needs. All CEDAR laboratory operations personnel are expected to fulfill multiple roles
The CEDAR Clinical Research Coordinator is responsible for the overall management of early detection clinical trials. This includes working with the regulatory management team to complete all regulatory documentation required by the OHSU IRB and sponsor, creation of study calendars and flow charts, assisting in the verification of patient eligibility, development of data collection instruments and consent forms, data entry, assurance of conduct of protocol in accordance with applicable NCI and FDA guidelines, maintenance of study patient records and source documentation, coordinating orders and study drug with the clinical team, ensuring that patient billing is accurate and assisting manager and financial team in verifying appropriate clinical trial billing. The study coordinator may have direct patient contact, process biological samples and may perform other non invasive testing such as ECGs. The study coordinator will also assist in the continuing education of physicians, residents, interns, nurses and other related personnel with regards to knowledge of clinical trials and activities.
Duties include but are not limited to:
Clinical Trial coordination
- Be knowledgeable about clinical research protocols and protocol requirements.
- Maintain inventory of supplies, reorder study kits and other supplies as needed. Ensure clinical research areas are stocked.
- Meet weekly with entire study team, communicate with team as appropriate to ensure efficient operations.
Participant Coordination
- Review patient data to determine appropriate eligibility and deficiencies regarding enrollment into clinical trials.
- Screen, recruit and schedule patients.
- Greet study subjects and consent patients prior to procedures.
- Procure and process human biological specimens (to include blood, urine, etc) in adherence with protocol parameters and appropriate training.
- Perform data entry and chart review/abstraction to verify that key data has been reported to the clinical research database or reported to the sponsor in the required format. Review follow up data clarifications or data queries and report within study timeline. Maintain and update subject data for study analysis and survival. Assist investigators with any special requests for data retrieval and/or evaluation and analysis of clinical data for ongoing research studies.
Education- Participate in continuing education activities within the research program and other areas to maintain current knowledge of disease process, research regulatory requirements, and process improvements for clinical trials.
- Behavioral testing of mice using a variety of assays including, but not limited to, measuring locomotor activity, motor coordination, body temperature, 2- and 4-bottle choice drinking, single bottle limited access drinking, operant self-administration, drug conditioned place preference, drug conditioned taste aversion, cognitive testing, and other behavioral assays, as dictated by the research aims.
- Preparation and planning for biomedical experiments in a timely manner. This will include: obtaining subjects, obtaining supplies, reserving space and equipment, assuring the proper environment for subjects, creation of data collection sheets, aiding with the development of the experimental protocol, obtaining final approval of the experimental protocol before moving forward, and other duties as assigned/necessary to ensure successful study completion. Preparation may include discussion with Drs. Phillips and Reed, Phillips Lab staff, VMU staff, and/or other laboratories. Thus, a high level of communication skill is implicitly required.
- Data collection and data entry for biomedical experiments. Physical and electronic records will be kept for each study in an orderly and timely manner. That is, all records must accurately, legibly and completely record experimental data and results of procedures used, to allow for replication by others. Experimental data entry is not considered complete until double-checked. All results are to be provided to the lab manager/PI within a timely manner.
- Other duties as needed: brain harvesting, brain slicing for immunohistochemical (IHC) or structural analysis, IHC analysis for c-fos or other protein, radioimmunoassay for specific hormones or neurotransmitters, autoradiography, DNA sampling and extraction, quantitative PCR genotyping, etc.

Managing Ophthalmic Genetic research projects and research assistants. This includes understanding the project goals, experiments that need to be completed and managing the research assistants to collect the required data.
Administration. This includes: ensuring Ophthalmic Genetics IACUC and IBC protocols are approved and current, updating the BioRaft chemical logs, ordering supplies, understanding lab finances, organizing the lab calendars, organizing lab meetings, etc.
Maintenance of equipment. This includes maintaining the following equipment, understanding how to use the equipment and being able to train new members of the lab how to use the equipment: OKT, OCT, Micron IV, and ERG system.

The Hemophilia Program Factor Program Manager works under the direction of the Hemophilia Program Administrator and is responsible for the oversight of the Hemophilia Pharmacy Factor Program’s day-to-day business and program operations, acting as the primary point of contact for any internal or external stakeholders of the Hemophilia Pharmacy 340B Factor Program. Responsibilities include data collection in human volunteers using a variety of noninvasive physiological monitoring devices (e.g., EKG, blood pressure, breathing, sleep, core body temperature, metabolic rate); setting up, testing, and maintaining equipment. These measurement sessions in the laboratory will be on a variable schedule, including regular overnight, early morning, and weekend shifts. When not making measurements in the laboratory other duties (mostly during the daytime) may include administrative tasks as needed (e.g. preparing and submitting Institutional Review Board documents, and medically screening volunteer research participants over the phone and in person).

Surgical First Assistant: Provides billable First Assistant services for a variety of cardiac surgical procedures as determined by the cardiac surgeon(s).
Operating Room Assistant: Provides operating room and ward procedure assistance to cardiac surgeons. Works with all groups to enhance professional, effective communication within the ORs.
Inpatient Duties: Provides inpatient care and follow-up of patients from OR to admission, and through discharge. Includes, but is not limited to: rounding on a daily basis with the cardiac team, developing and implementing, in conjunction with physicians, clinical plans of care and/or protocols for inpatients on the Cardiac Surgery service with common conditions/diagnoses/procedures; educating residents and nursing unit staff on these protocols, with the goal of enhancing quality of care, enhancing quality of patient services, and decreasing length of inpatient stay; participating with hospital/unit staff in evaluating results of these protocols and continually improving effectiveness of same; working actively with hospital and unit staff to rapidly develop and implement discharge plans for inpatients on the Cardiac Surgery service and to address length of stay issues; promoting and maintaining health of inpatients on the Cardiac Surgery service through the use of ancillary services, educational materials, and counseling of patients and families; providing resident and intern training/education in utilization of plans of care to improve patient services and outcomes of treatment; providing and/or participating in clinical in-service training and staff educational programs for the inpatient service. Outpatient Responsibilities: Provide patient care in clinic for pre-operative and postoperative care, wound care, urgent visits, and chronic follow-up as determined by the attending physicians. This includes, but is not limited to: developing patient care plans with residents, nurses and the cardiac surgeons to ensure continuity of care and enhance quality of outpatient care. Promote and maintain health through the use of ancillary services, educational materials, and counseling of patients and families for outpatients; provide same day response to medical advice/prescription phone requests and coordinating patient services with outpatient staff and other departmental PA’s. Promote a safe environment for patients and adhering to policies regarding patient care and confidentiality to support the mission and goals of OHSU. Recognize emergency or urgent situations and acting immediately and effectively to provide emergency resuscitation and/or treatment. Assess patients to the outpatient clinic to determine medical necessity of visit and determining a course of action based on department and OHSU policies and/or in consultation with the attending physician as appropriate. Act as a resource for patient education materials for patients and families; consulting with the surgeons or other faculty to provide up-to-date condition-specific health care information to outpatients. Provide high quality customer service to both external and internal customers (patients, referring providers, insurance carriers, internal providers, and other OHSU faculty and staff) that meets or exceeds the service standards for the health care industry. This duty includes prompt and professional communication efforts, face-to-face customer contact skills, crisis management, use of available information technology, standard complaint processing, flexibility in coverage of internal service needs, and continuous application of process improvement methods and skills. Teaching: Provide teaching of cardiac surgical and diagnostic treatments to medical students, interns, residents, nursing staff, and other support staff on the inpatient and/or outpatient service. Provide / participate in teaching conferences, rounds, clinical in-services and staff educational programs for the outpatient & inpatient cardiac surgery service.

This position assists in overall operations of the OHSU electrical systems program. This position is expected to work independently on the management and development of this program and advise Utilities Management on the ongoing health of this critical system.
This position is also responsible for:
- Development and maintenance of OHSU electrical panel schedules, one lines, floor plans and other electrical infrastructure records and OHSU arc-flash study records.
- Development, maintenance, and oversight of OHSU electrical shutdown approval process (similar to PECO) including performing risk assessment for technicians.
- Interactions with vendors, including general contractors, trade contractors, architects, and consulting engineers to provide oversight for the design and installation of OHSU electrical infrastructure.
Coordination with OHSU users (occupants) and other facilities staff to ensure limited impact from electrical shutdown and support with temporary design solutions to ensure 100% uptime of critical equipment.
- Provide 50 % direct clinical services to program clients including evaluation, individual, group, family counseling, case management and documentation of clinical services consistent with program standards and relevant OARs. Services provided will reflect cultural competence and knowledge of evidenced based practices regarding the clients and their clinical concerns.
- Provide clinical supervision of counseling staff and students working in the program including individual and group supervision, supervision for licensure.
- Participate in quality management activities including participation on the Quality Improvement Committee and conducting audits of client records to assure accuracy and appropriateness of clinical care.
- Attend staff meetings as required and other program and departmental meetings as necessary.
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with other program staff, Department of Psychiatry, and other OHSU departments, referral sources and other community agencies.

- Process disbursements, reimbursements, Pcard reconciliations, journal entries, and deposits for Financial Analyst review and approval. Assist Financial Analyst with troubleshooting issues. Assist with other transactions as needed.
- Assist with ordering supplies, processing requisitions and purchase orders.
- Provide assistance to Executive Specialist and Project Coordinator in coordinating/scheduling meetings, events, seminars, and other departmental activities. Assist with catering setup and cleanup. Provide backup conference room tech/AV support. Update readerboard.
- Act as backup support to Project Coordinator, Executive Specialist, and the rest of the BME admin team. Other duties as assigned by the Department Administrator.
- Serve as second emergency floor leader and attend safety meetings; maintain and communicate emergency action plan. Assist with facilities and surplus requests, and coordinate hood certifications. Maintain cleanliness of common areas. Sort mail across 3 buildings.
Customer Service:
Provides high quality customer service to both external customers (patient, referring providers, and insurance carriers) and internal customers (OHSU health care providers and staff) that meets or exceeds the service standards of the health care industry. This duty includes prompt and professional communication efforts, face -to-face customer contact skills, crisis management, facility with available information, technology, standard complaint processing, flexible coverage of internal service needs, and the continuous application of process improvement methods and skills.
Clinical Operations Monitoring:
Investigates clinic scheduling errors, patient volume and flow, unkept appointments and reschedulings, and providers’ time utilization; recommends operational changes as needed. Investigates claim denials, particularly for evidence of PAS non-compliance; communicate findings to appropriate PAS personnel and providers. Reviews cash-collected statistics with anticipated collections data, and investigate discrepancies. Investigates patient and provides complaints, and develops appropriate corrective action plans. Maintains accurate provider templates and listings of available clinical services for the cluster
Clinical Service Resource:
Shares PAS expertise and disseminates information to other PAS personnel. Serves as an expert user of PAS systems software including RSS, Order Entry, LCR, EAD, and the Minimal and Common Data Sets. Maintains working knowledge of diagnostic and procedural coding appropriate for the service area. Maintains PAS Specialist skills in the areas of enrollment and authorization, arranged care, point-of-service operations, integrated care, and telecommunications. Provides direct customer service in a PAS
Specialist role for a minimum of three half-days per quarter in different administrative clusters. May be required to fill as needed for any subordinate PAS position within the service area. When necessary, communicates directly with patients or other customers who have encountered difficulty accessing health care at OHSU.
