The Department of Oral Rehabilitation & Biosciences is seeking a high school student worker for a summer research project concurrent with the OHSU School of Dentistry's Opening Dental and Oral Research Summers (DORS) program. The candidate will perform research in-line with the goals of the principal investigator, Jonathon L. Baker, Ph.D. The research group is dynamic, vibrant, funded by the NIH/NIDCR, and leverages microbiology and bioinformatics to discover how the bacteria living in the human oral cavity impact health and disease. The position will provide the opportunity to gain experience conducting and presenting research.    Under direct supervision, primarily performs basic research or lab activities similar to a Research Assistant 1 or Lab Aide*.    Research at the OHSU-SOD will include not only basic bench work in the laboratory but also learning how to design experiments: - Independently using instrumentation and performing basic laboratory techniques such as pipetting and buffering solutions with a pH meter - Generating and analyzing data from experiments and collected health surveys - The summer will include lab meetings and learning how to keep a lab notebook and daily log of activities

Clinical Activities (not related to teaching or research): This position works with a multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive care to urogynecology patients. This position will require expertise in clinical practice and administration within the full range of urogynecology outpatient services. The spectrum of care includes but is not limited to: overactive bladder and incontinence, painful bladder/interstitial cystitis, prolapse not yet evaluated by Gynecologist (i.e. referrals from PCPs), constipation, recurrent UTIs, pessary fittings and maintenance, bladder instillations, urodynamics, Genitourinary syndrome of Menopause with support for NAMS certification, and sexual dysfunction.   Scholarly Activities (research/writing, abstracts, grant supported work, presentations, etc.): Like all OHSU faculty members, advanced practice providers are expected to have some scholarly activity, this may be limited to educating learners as outlined below, but may also include research, and other grant supported work or academic papers and presentations in disciplines related to their field of expertise. APP faculty members are expected to participate in clinical research as needed, often with the help of trained research support staff and senior faculty principal investigators.   Education Activities (include types of teaching and types of student taught): This position provides clinical education to fellows, residents, and medical students participating in OB/GYN rotations. As part of the multidisciplinary team charged with educating learners in the urogynecology environment this person would be expected to provide feedback and evaluation, both formally and informally, of learners working in urogynecology. This faculty member will provide education and feedback to students and trainees.   Administrative Activities: As an OHSU faculty member, this position will be required to participate in faculty meetings at the division and department level. This position is under the supervision of Kevin Duff for the Department of Neurology’s Division of Aging, Alzheimer’s, and Related Disorders. The candidate will conduct neuropsychometric assessments for various projects being conducted by our faculty. The primary focus of this position is the assessment of older adults to provide data for various research projects. These assessments include neurocognitive evaluations, questionnaires, medical history, and functional assessments of daily activities. These assessments will occur in –clinics at OHSU or virtually. Additional duties include, but are not limited to: assisting with participant recruitment, determining study eligibility for research volunteers, obtaining informed consent, and facilitating study enrollment, as well as entering data.   This position will cover up to 20 hours/week. Familiarity with neuropsychological/cognitive testing is preferred, although training will be provided. Experience working with older adults, especially in a research setting, is also desirable. OHSU's Inventory Strategy & Program Management - Continually monitor resources, processes, and procedures of inventory strategy & program management for OHSU. Oversees the $6.3 million of Macadam Warehouse inventory processes to procure and stock appropriate levels of necessary supplies to ensure continuity of the supply chain. Collaborates with OHSU medical supply distributor, Purchasing, and other departments to convert, substitute and acquire new products. Responsible for having expert knowledge on the JIT/LUM program, ParEx, Pyxis, ParKing, IPA, PickPro, and Home systems. Accountable for making inventory decisions on product changes and cost-savings initiatives as requested by the OHSU Value Analysis Committee. Manages tracks coordinates inventory that is in storage at our offsite storage location in North Portland. Inventory is being added and subtracted to this location weekly. Process Control & Project Management - Responsible for overseeing and improving departmental processes and ensuring that each operates efficiently and effectively. Works closely with PeriOp, the Distribution Manager, Customer Service Manager, and Linen/Surgery Supervisor to develop and implement processes, standards, and improvement initiatives, which will ensure that the Logistics warehouse is following best practices in the entire supply chain. To improve processes and procedures, they will utilize the guidelines of OPEx to Formulate and implement departmental and organizational goals. Monitors and adheres to rules, regulations, and policies— with a strong focus on building excellence from the ground up. Financial Management - Must meet or exceed fiscal goals monthly and is accountable for justifying any variance to senior management ($500k). Responsible for managing $6.3 million of Logistics Warehouse Inventory and 123 sub inventories totaling $1.6 million. Also accountable for approving the Logistics Inventory daily requisition. Reporting - Responsible for reading, tracking, and writing any Patient Safety Intelligence (PSI) reports to manufacturers, other Logistics Managers, and nursing staff. Establishes Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and other metrics to measure the performance and drive improvement of all inventory locations. KPIs would include but are not limited to: inventory value, inventory turns, cycle count accuracy, inventory adjustments, ABC stratification (including identification of slow-movers & no-movers), and Economic Order Quantity (EOQ). Monitors daily inventory reports for spikes, incorrect transactions, or missing transactions. Collaborates with Business Data Analyst 3 to create and run inventory reports. Personnel Management - Fully responsible for hiring, coaching, and training the Inventory Team. Must effectively communicate expectations with departmental staff through individual GROW conversations, one-on-one meetings, coaching, and staff meetings. Monitor and evaluate performance, act as a role model for our core competencies, and use the Campus Services six tenets to guide the culture. Screen patients for and obtain/record patient’s chief complaint, take accurate history of illnesses/surgeries (Ophthalmic and General), past ocular history, family history, drug allergies, and medications.  Assist physician with completing/transferring patient information to the patient problem list as required per JCAHO.  Perform ophthalmic testing as appropriate per patient.  This includes but is not limited to checking/documenting distance and near vision in adults and children with and without correction, clearly determining from patient history if the patient is needing new glasses on any given visit.  Pupillary assessment to rule out afferent defect and to check pupil size (rule out asymmetry), corneal curvature, corneal pachymetry, corneal topography, color vision testing, must be proficient in performing lensometry including reading lenses with multifocal and progressive adds, power of sphere, axis of cylinder and cylinder power, and orientation of prism and measurement of interpupillary distance.  Perform applanation tonometry, and utilize Tonopen (noncontact tonometry) to check intraocular pressure.  Perform confrontation visual fields.  Must be proficient in refractometry and auto refraction, fogging with astigmatic dials, cross cylinder refinement and measurement of accommodation.   Must be able to perform cover/uncover test, alternate cover test and quantify strabismus.  Must be able to document ocular motility, presence of strabismus or nystagmus.  Must be able to perform Worth 4-dot test and Stereopsis test.  Must be able to test near point of convergence, ductions, versions and vergences.  Must be able to perform Potential Acuity Meter testing, Glare Testing.  Instill dilating and other ophthalmic drops per physician’s instructions.   Perform calibration of automated and non-automated perimeters.  Maintain a working  knowledge of computerized visual field programs, and be able to perform Amsler Grid testing.  Maintain a working knowledge of disease processes that may affect the visual pathway and resultant changes in the visual field due to these disease processes in order to adequately perform Goldmann (non-automated) perimetry (central and peripheral).  Perform SITA and Standard Humphrey (automated) (central and peripheral).   Assist doctors during examination as needed.  Apply eye dressings, protective shields and dispense medications as directed by the physician.  Provide patient instruction, education and assistance as required.  Always be willing to assist patients in clinic areas.  Per standard guidelines, clean exam lanes and minor surgical instruments.  Prepare for the sterilization process, either sterilizing instruments utilizing the sterilizer in the Minor Surgery Room per guidelines or preparing instruments to be sent for sterilization.  Responsible for room maintenance including periodic cleaning of exam lanes.  Keep rooms stocked with appropriate instruments, as well as necessary ophthalmic drops, per physician’s direction.   Other duties:  Take ‘tech calls as needed to assist front desk scheduling team, refill pharmacy requests as per physician guidelines; fax/send glasses prescriptions as indicated.  Set up ophthalmic examination rooms, stock supplies as necessary, perform minor repairs and triage to Clinical Engineering or outside vendors as necessary.  Maintain instruments and be able to clean and properly sterilize items.  Maintain ophthalmic exam rooms and ensure rooms are stocked, and have appropriate paperwork, and are orderly and clean.  This includes periodic cleaning of trial lenses and examining lenses, ordering of linens and medications from pharmacy.  Open examination rooms in the AM and close in the PM (if clinic completed).  Provide administrative assistance and support as required, assist in pulling patient charts and making appointment reminder phone calls as necessary.  Duties include enlisting translators when necessary, procuring presurgery history and physicals from primary care physician’s offices, verifying patient insurance information, obtaining insurance authorizations/referrals where indicated, and handling faxes/calls for pharmacy requests.  Being aware of patient’s financial/insurance status (pay scale if patient is self insured, and insurance coverage where valid) in the OHSU demographic database.  Assisting physician in filling out forms such as Commission for the Blind forms and forms regarding the visual impairment of patients, and other such forms.  Learn computer applications (scheduling, order entry, etc.) used in the clinic and achieve understanding of insurance authorization process.  Assist in other clinic functions as necessary, including making appointments, preparing charts, answering phones or any other general duty as needed.  Exhibit initiative and teamwork in performing all daily tasks.    Skills Maintanence:  Participate in continuing education courses and activities.  Have knowledge of and be able to practice JCAHO clinical guidelines.  Demonstrate competence in all required skills during yearly skills evaluation.   Certification:  Participate in continuing education courses and activities, maintain current JCAHPO certification.  Have knowledge of and be able to practice JCAHO clinical guidelines.  Demonstrate competence in all required skills during yearly skills evaluation.   Customer Service:  Provides high quality customer service to patients, OHSU faculty and referring providers, to include PCPs and their office staff, insurance providers in requesting referrals, and co-workers and staff as well as setting an example in training new employees.  Maintains a high standard of patient interactions skills and is exemplary in addressing patient complaints when necessary.   Participation in the Cash Handling Process:  On an as needed basis, be able to perform routine front/back office duties to include billing, quoting of deposits, co-payments and payments per all CEI and OHSU guidelines and processes.
