The Pathology Services Unit (PSU) is an integral part of the ONPRC’s veterinary care and multidisciplinary research programs. After training, the Research Assistant 2 will assist the veterinary pathologist with postmortem examinations of nonhuman primates (NHP) for disease diagnosis and surveillance and comprehensive research support. Duties include venipuncture, sedative/anesthetic administration, tissue collection, specialized dissections and perfusions, pathology data input into the electronic veterinary health record as well as general laboratory support and work in specialized specimen tracking software. The position requires close coordination with pathologists, research staff and manager to maximize the use of the precious NHP resource. Other duties include necropsy room cleaning and preparation, sample management and educating visiting personnel on safety procedures. Work involves handling and processing of biological samples, working at Biosafety Levels 2 and 3 and working with potentially hazardous chemical agents.

The Program in Chemical Biology at OHSU has an open postdoctoral researcher position in the Beatty Lab. The fellow will conduct research at the interface of chemistry and infectious disease, working collaboratively to develop and optimize novel enzyme probes. Two long-term goals for this project are: i) to understand how mycobacterial pathogens synthesize their cell walls and ii) to study beta-lactam drug susceptibility in replicating and dormant Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

The Laboratory Animal Technician 1 is the first level of a three-level series. At this level, this position is focused on providing husbandry, healthcare and research support for laboratory animals maintained at the ONPRC. This position will learn and master the ability to perform the manual and technical tasks directly related to the care of, and research support for the use of, laboratory animals. This includes safely performing basic animal husbandry and animal handling, healthcare procedures, including but not limited to feeding and sanitizing procedures, animal capture and restraint, administration of medications, and the collection of body fluids and tissues.
The area of work assignment and specific tasks will vary, depending on animal population and care requirements, service requirements, staffing needs and the individual’s knowledge. The Animal Resources & Research Support (ARRS) houses approximately 4600 non-human primates, and approximately 2500 small laboratory animals, on a daily basis. The animals are housed in 8 buildings and 17 outdoor enclosures, on the ONPRC/OHSU campus. There are approximately 60 employees who are responsible for providing care of research animals.
The successful candidate for this position will have basic knowledge for the care of animals, demonstrated by experience with household pets, farm, or 4-H animals. This position requires the ability read, write, and follow oral and written instructions, as well as having the ability to communicate effectively in oral and/or written formats with both technical and professional staff.
Some duties will require working outside in inclement weather and daily work may involve moving on wet and/or slick surfaces, through narrow corridors between rows of cages, and climbing stairs to corral observation towers. There is risk of exposure to zoonotic agents through injury, by direct contact with animals or their tissues and body fluids, or by contact with equipment contaminated by animals or their tissues and body fluids. Some work duties may also include risk of exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals and sanitizing chemicals.

- Implements new calendaring and scheduling initiatives in conjunction with OHSU Simulation.
- Assists with program data entry projects, quarterly and as needed, for benchmarking simulation effectiveness.
- Coordinates all within-school simulation needs, including scheduling equipment/supplies, space, and interfacing with OHSU simulation to facilitate operational needs.
- Partners with OHSU Simulation to facilitate the SON’s Temporary Simulation Annex (TSA) operational needs. Develops familiarity with simulation-related computer technology and software.
- Troubleshoots and triages the technology for simulation and skills lab events held at the SON.
- Campus administration (10% of duties)
- Answers priority requests, re-adjusts workload as needed, and informs the course coordinators and program directors appropriately.
- Participates in planning meetings, setting agendas, assisting with meeting arrangements, and taking minutes as assigned.
- Communicates programmatic needs to OHSU Simulation and partners with Simulation Operations Specialists at OHSU Simulation to ensure learner needs are met.
- Maintains departmental equipment, work areas, and facilities; requisitions supplies and equipment as needed for instruction.
- Assists in developing educational/orientation programs, presentations, and stakeholder education materials.
Coordinate patient care appointments and managed care as directed by physician and/or nurse staff; Serves as a liaison and information resource for physicians, and nursing support staff; Return phone messages; Prepare and mail new patient information packets; Direct patients to appropriate providers for other health care issues; Complete and route direct referrals to other clinical services; Enter patient information accurately into Epic when necessary; Proper use of OHSU forms and documentation required for all patients. Works with providers to maintain current clinic templates to include blocking schedules in Epic in a timely manner.
Referral Processing: Process incoming referrals to the GAS Specialties. Assure that demographics are correct (i.e. address, contact numbers, PCP, etc). Print off material from Epic related to reason for the referral. Create Earl shell filling in all fields possible. If missing important medical information, contact the referring office to request it. Document in Earl the status of the referral and who it is going to review with/where it is located if we are waiting for additional information that will be needed prior to the medical review.
Create a packet of information for the person reviewing. Document status of referral and who it is going to review with. Send packets to appropriate person for medical review once records needed are obtained. Organize medical information that is easily reviewable marking specific types of records.
Call Processing: Responsible for connecting the patient with the appropriate individual to progress their care in the clinic; Transfers calls to schedulers as needed, creates telephone encounters, contacts nursing coordinators, and pages providers and staff as needed per circumstance; Scheduling and managing of patient access to Digestive Health Center (DHC); Create telephone calls from patients in the EMR which will include accurate documentation of requests for medication refills, complaints, general informatin inquiries and urgent health care concerns; Triage calls to the appropriate staff for patient care /needs assessment; Process call (answering, screening, routing, paging etc.) in a timely, polite, professional manner; Route calls to appropriate conclusion; Provide information to callers, including directions, addresses and hours of operation; Use schedules and departmental procedures to locate appropriate on-call person for internal and external callers; Understand and process calls per departmental policy for each encounter type (ie refill, telephone, documentation, etc)
Managed Care Coordination: Process all Managed Care functions for the GAS Specialties clinic visits, and non-OHSU imaging services; Maintains current information on managed care insurance plans and serve as a liaison and information resources for physicians, nursing support staff, co-workers, referring physicians offices, patients and insurance companies on authorization requirements per diagnosis and service. Gather and/or verify patient information including demographics, insurance coverage, and financial status in accordance with OHSU and OHSU UMG best practices. Confirm patient eligibility for health care coverage and clarify any managed care arrangements. Initiates authorization requests for subsequent care. Enter all information accurately into OHSU databases and /or into the medical record when necessary. Document managed care in OHSU EMR system in accordance with OHSU and OHSU UMG best practices. Obtain authorizations for clinical care, capsules, and all ancillary studies. Applies problem solving and negotiating skills in resolving patient concerns and managed care related problems. Follow up on pending authorizations until they are obtained.
Integrated Care: Obtain prior medical records and studies on complicated patient cases per nurse review on the majority of incoming patients; Responsible for obtaining, recording, tracking, and verifying referrals and authorizations for the respective outpatient clinic and lab visits when necessary.
Executive level support for the Chair and Executive Committee:
- Independently manage complex scheduling priorities and coordinate day-to-day activities for executives.
- Serve as the communication liaison between DMICE and the other departments, schools, colleges and affiliated units.
- Manage incoming and outgoing correspondence and inquiries in a timely and accurate manner.
- Effectively and efficiently communicate information to faculty, staff, students, and others on matters related to the DMICE initiatives and missions.
- Support leadership in identifying internal and external resources for the DMICE strategic plan.
- Compose, edit and proof written material such as correspondence, presentations, organizational charts, reports, proposals, agreements and personnel documents.
- Manage scheduling with Chair, EC members for participation in institutional and SOM workgroups and task forces.
- Summarize EC meeting notes and identify action steps.
- Coordinate travel arrangements DMICE Chair and EC for department-related activities, including air, hotel, and ground transportation.
- Contribute as a member of the DMICE Administrative Team with other administrative assignments as deemed necessary.
Faculty Development:
- Oversee Faculty Annual Review process.
- Provide support to the P&T administrative process as needed.
- Coordinate with appropriate DMICE staff to collect and create documents for grant submissions and reporting including creating and maintaining bio sketches; maintain updated faculty CVs from annual review process; assist with PPQ (Proposed Project Questionnaire) creation.
- Monitor OHSU Now and partner with the Faculty Development Vice Chair to provide content for DMICE faculty development opportunities in DMICE newsletter. Assist with creating monthly DMICE newsletter and distributing to DMICE staff and faculty.
- Oversee submission process for nomination of faculty as Graduate Faculty.
Coordination and technical support:
- Process Pcard reconciliations and reimbursements for the DMICE Chair and EC for department-related activities.
- Planning and coordinating virtual or in-person events as needed.
- Partner with appropriate DMICE staff to oversee content changes and design of the DMICE website and the Pacific Northwest Evidence-based Practice Center websites.
- Promote DMICE events on department websites, listservs and in OHSU Now as appropriate.
- Assist with departmental social media postings.
- Conducting and analyzing scientific research, preparation of written reports
- Maintenance of lab equipment and facilities, training of staff and interns regarding protocols and procedures
- Other general lab duties as assigned
