Direct management and supervision of OHSU Health CCMC Billing and Follow-up units:
- Provide essential leadership direction pertinent to the operations of the department.

- Answer phone lines, and screen and deliver all messages in a timely fashion. This involves personally handling non-nursing/medical calls, and making sure that messages the providers and/or nurses receive is accurate and complete.
- Responsible for the accurate and timely completion, submission and follow- up of patient paperwork, such as FMLA, DME, questionnaires, etc.
- May be responsible for gathering patient information, or relaying patient information, to internal and external stakeholders (i.e. referring providers, referred to departments, patients, interdisciplinary team members, etc.), which requires excellent communication skills, both in writing and verbally, and attention to detail and consideration of HIPAA and PHI regulations.
Administrative & Clinical Support
- Optimize use of provider and nursing time for essential duties by developing new procedures and tracking processes to streamline operations of the practice
- Document legibly, concisely, and completely to ensure others can accurately assess the status of patient progress by reviewing said documentation
- Answer and respond to calls from a variety of stakeholders, ensuring timely and professional message response

Call Processing:
- Responsible for connecting the patient with the appropriate individual to progress their care in the clinic; Transfers calls to schedulers as needed, creates telephone encounters, contacts nursing coordinators, and pages providers and staff as needed per circumstance; Scheduling and managing of patient access to Oncology services at CHH2. Create telephone calls from patients in Epic which will include accurate documentation of requests for medication refills, complaints, general informatin inquiries and urgent health care concerns; Triage calls to the appropriate staff for patient care /needs assessment; Process call (answering, screening, routing, paging etc.) in a timely, polite, professional manner; Route calls to appropriate conclusion; Provide information to callers, including directions, addresses and hours of operation; Use schedules and departmental procedures to locate appropriate on-call person for internal and external callers; Understand and process calls per departmental policy for each encounter type (ie refill, telephone, documentation, etc); Expected to take 20% of incoming volume of clinic calls. 60-80 calls per day.
Scheduling:
- Coordinate patient care appointments and managed care as directed by physician and/or nurse staff; Serves as a liaison and information resource for physicians, and nursing support staff; Return phone messages; Prepare and mail patient information packets; Direct patients to appropriate providers for other health care issues; Complete and route direct referrals to other clinical services; Enter patient information accurately into the electronic medical record when necessary. Customer Service:
- Provide the highest level of customer service to both external customers (patients and their families, referring providers, insurance carriers, etc.) and internal customers (OHSU health care providers and staff) that meet or exceed the service standards of the health care industry. This duty includes prompt and professional communication efforts, face-to-face customer contact skills, crisis management, facility with available information technology, standard complaint processing, flexible coverage of internal service needs and the continuous application of process improvement methods and skills.
Check-in/Checkout:
- Checks out clinic, procedure, and infusion appointments. This includes, but is not limited to careful review of insurance benefits, demographic information, confirming insurance eligibility, and /or authorization. Checks patient account numbers and corrects any problems, seeking advice from Central Registration as required. Ensures that all appointment comment information is accurate and completed. Identifies and updates deductible payments, co- payments, and prepayment requirements. Proper use of OHSU forms and documentation required for all patients.
- Core Support materiel assistant including: OR core support, picking cases, maintaining OR stock or ordering department replenishment stock as needed
- Inventory Control and Distribution: Checks stock of supplies on an ongoing basis to ensure sufficient stock; maintains inventory records; maintains computer based record of instrument sets decontaminated, equipment dispensed and to whom; records items ordered and submit to supervisor; operates computer to locate patient information for distribution and billing; restocks isolation and code cart supplies; rotates equipment and supplies to ensure that earlier dated items are dispensed first; takes orders for instrument sets and equipment by phone from multiple OR and procedure rooms; dispenses hospital equipment to patient care units; transports and picks up sterile and non-sterile instruments.
- Decontamination and Cleaning: Sorts used soiled instruments and decontaminates by utilizing proper manual and mechanical techniques; decontaminates medical equipment; tests equipment and instruments for proper operation; shelves decontaminated equipment and supplies according to type of equipment, date decontaminated and unit or department using item; cleans hospital equipment such as infusion pumps, suction machines and heating and cooling units; may make minor repairs or refers to repair person; assist in maintaining instrument trays for intubation sets; may operate flash sterilizers according to standards of practice and maintains sterility assurance at all times including transport sterile instruments to the operating room under strict sterile conditions.
Clinical Activities
- Practice that emanates from the School of Nursing is expected to support the teaching and research missions of the School.
- In the practice environment, teaching occurs concurrently with clinical activities. Specific duties include:
- Provide supplementary coverage of labor and delivery call when the permanent faculty are ill, in retreat, traveling professionally, on vacation or on leave.

To provide intra-operative technical assistance to physicians and RN's who care for pediatric patients experiencing a surgical intervention/other invasive procedure. Surgical Technologists are an integral part of the team providing surgical care to patients. Surgical Technologists function in the role of scrub person. Independently conduct cutting-edge research on the development and delivery of various gene correction constructs using both in vitro and in vivo models. These responsibilities include:
- design and optimize gene editing constructs for targeted genome modifications,
- employ iPSC derivation techniques and perform thorough characterization to ensure the quality and integrity of cell lines used in the research,
- day to day maintenance of cell cultures,
- perform molecular, histological, and immunocytochemical analyses to evaluate the effects of genome editing on targeted cells and tissues,
- implement effective methodologies to deliver gene editing constructs into fibroblasts and iPSCs, optimizing delivery efficiency,
- utilize differentiation protocols to guide iPSCs into neuronal lineage for studying gene editing effects on neuronal cells phenotype,
- evaluation of on-target and off-target edits using NGS approaches,
- develop and implement in vivo delivery strategies to target specific tissues and assess the efficacy of genome editing.
Report Preparation and Literature Research:
- Prepare reports containing analytical, descriptive, and evaluative content that will be submitted for publication or for contribution to grant applications, progress reports, presentations at national and international meetings, etc. Conduct research of literature and database analysis.
Data Collection/Analysis/Record Keeping:
- Collect and analyze scientific data pertinent to the research projects. Manage and maintain detailed animal records and all research related information in an easily identifiable manner for current and historical documentation.
Personnel Supervision:
- Serve as lead-person for laboratory research assistants; train staff in research techniques and protocols; delegate tasks and oversee work of students and other support staff.
Material Presentation:
- Present research findings to fellow investigators and collaborative scientists; attend professional meetings.
Other duties:
- Perform additional tasks as required or assigned, to fulfill the mission of the Center for Embryonic Cell & Gene Therapy.
Clinical Responsibilities:
- Provide medical and advanced practice management independently and/or in conjunction with attending physicians. Works in conjunction with attending physicians to provide continued clinical care in the inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Communicate with attending physicians, patients and families regarding patients’ conditions, treatment plans, and urgent medical needs.
- Assure appropriate setting of care (inpatient, critical care, acute care)
- Document subjective and objective findings, assessment and plan clearly and accurately in daily progress notes.
- Identify discharge needs early and communicate plan to patients, families, nurse case manager, and other healthcare team members.
- Work with nurses, social workers, nutrition services, pharmacy and others as needed to assure optimum patient care.
- Make appropriate referrals to specialty care service within OHSU and outside of OHSU.
- Consult with specialty care providers when appropriate.
- Maintain communication with external providers and other individuals and agencies (e.g. skilled nursing facilities) as appropriate.
- Perform clinical procedures as indicated (e.g. central venous access, chest drains, intubation)
- Adheres to best practice protocols and policies
- Respond to and manage adverse infusion reactions and other emergencies, and
- Review patient labs and physical conditions in order to override treatment parameters as appropriate.
- Ordering as needed (PRN) medications.
- Review urgent EKG’s, imaging, laboratory studies and other ancillary tests prior to start of treatment.
- Review investigational study EKG’s, imaging, labs and other ancillary tests prior to start of treatment.
- Provide consultation to OTU nurses.
- Consult with pharmacists on treatment changes and PRN medications.
Education:
- Support OHSU’s academic missions by participating in the design, development and assessment of program curricula for professional specialty area; including course objectives, instructional methods, learning outcomes, projects and assessment measures.
- Assist in meeting the educational needs of staff, residents, fellows, students, patients, family members, and others as appropriate.
- Collaborate with OHSU team members to establish or revise clinical pathways and patient education materials.
- Attends and participates in Grand Rounds, trauma conferences, fellow lectures, national conferences and other learning opportunities as available.
Quality and Research:
- Work with clinic and hospital staff to optimize order sets, patient instructions, and other infrastructure that supports patient care.
- Identify and engage in opportunities to improve the quality and efficiency of care provided to trauma patients.
- Promote use of appropriate research findings in practice to exceed the standards of care.
- Work with the physician leadership, nurse managers, nursing staff and social workers to prevent and/or respond to patient complaints.
- Effectively manage resources.
- Participate as coinvestigator in clinical research studies.
