A Research Assistant 2 position is available in the lab of Dr. Megan Burger at the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute in the exciting field of cancer immunology. The Burger Lab focuses on uncovering factors regulating T cell responses against cancer to inform the design of next generation cancer immunotherapies. We use genetically engineered mouse models of lung cancer and cutting-edge single-cell analysis platforms to deeply investigate mechanisms of tumor-immune crosstalk and perform preclinical immunotherapy trials.
The Research Assistant 2 will work under the supervision of Dr. Burger and senior lab staff to provide technical support for ongoing research projects. Responsibilities will include:
- Processing of tissue samples from mice.
- Molecular and cell biology assays, such as PCR, molecular cloning, qRT-PCR, western blot, lentiviral transduction, immunohistochemistry and cyclic immunofluorescence staining.
- Immunological assays, such as primary lymphocyte isolation, multiparameter flow cytometry, T cell culture, and ELISA.
- Assistance with single-cell RNA-sequencing workflow.
- Animal husbandry and mouse colony maintenance.
- Animal dosing and monitoring (i.e., injections, blood collection) for preclinical immunotherapy trials.

The Registered Respiratory Therapist will be responsible for performance of research pulmonary function tests as well as clinical, administrative, and educational research activities related to the management of patients in ongoing clinical trials. Responsible for the completion of independent tasks including the organization of quality control issues in the performance and review of pulmonary function tests (PFTs) following American Thoracic Society Review/ European Respiratory Society review criteria. This includes in depth knowledge of the inclusion and exclusion criteria for the acceptance of measurements obtained from the following testing techniques: flow volume loops; passive respiratory compliance and resistance from the single breath occlusion technique, functional residual capacity from the nitrogen washout technique, infant forced expiratory flows from the raised volume rapid thoracic compression technique (RVRTC), and measurements of alveolar volume (Va) lung diffusing capacity (DLCO) and methacholine challenges.
This candidate will be knowledgeable in all of the physiologic principles involved in these techniques and be able to discuss and explain them to other personnel as well as research personnel and respiratory therapists at collaborating institutions.
This candidate will also be able to train new hires in these techniques and independently trouble shoot equipment malfunctions/ repairs that may be needed.
This candidate will be able to review the quality of tests independently according to American Thoracic Society review criteria and relay the testing acceptability to the PI. This is a crucial responsibility to the success of the ongoing research projects.
The research duties include, but are not limited to:
- Identifying potential qualifying patients in the NICU.
- Tactfully discussing research studies with potential participants and NICU staff members (which include neonatologists, neonatal nurse practitioners, bedside nurses and respiratory therapists, and pediatric residents).

The Laboratory Animal Technician 1 is the first level of a three-level series. At this level, this position is focused on providing husbandry, healthcare and research support for laboratory animals maintained at the ONPRC. This position will learn and master the ability to perform the manual and technical tasks directly related to the care of, and research support for the use of, laboratory animals. This includes safely performing basic animal husbandry and animal handling, healthcare procedures, including but not limited to feeding and sanitizing procedures, animal capture and restraint, administration of medications, and the collection of body fluids and tissues.
The area of work assignment and specific tasks will vary, depending on animal population and care requirements, service requirements, staffing needs and the individual’s knowledge. The Animal Resources & Research Support (ARRS) houses approximately 4600 non-human primates, and approximately 2500 small laboratory animals, on a daily basis. The animals are housed in 8 buildings and 17 outdoor enclosures, on the ONPRC/OHSU campus. There are approximately 60 employees who are responsible for providing care of research animals.
The successful candidate for this position will have basic knowledge for the care of animals, demonstrated by experience with household pets, farm, or 4-H animals. This position requires the ability read, write, and follow oral and written instructions, as well as having the ability to communicate effectively in oral and/or written formats with both technical and professional staff.
Some duties will require working outside in inclement weather and daily work may involve moving on wet and/or slick surfaces, through narrow corridors between rows of cages, and climbing stairs to corral observation towers. There is risk of exposure to zoonotic agents through injury, by direct contact with animals or their tissues and body fluids, or by contact with equipment contaminated by animals or their tissues and body fluids. Some work duties may also include risk of exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals and sanitizing chemicals.

The Clinical Veterinary Technician 1 assists in providing clinical care, nursing support and husbandry for a variety of USDA covered laboratory research animals including those typically housed in a BSL2+. Work may involve an ABSL3 facility. This is the first level of a three-level series. It is distinguished from the higher levels with increased supervision, a focus on entry level procedural activities and reduced responsibility for performing complex animal care protocols and veterinary diagnostic and treatment procedures. At this level there is an emphasis on animal health, hospitalized patient care, and training, with increased supervision of techniques and decision-making processes. CVT 1s typically will need supervision or guidance from senior staff or DVMs greater than 50% of their workday. CVTs are distinguished from the Veterinary Research/Health Technician series by the focus on triage, case management, and provision of surgical repairs for wounds.
Work inside an ABSL3 facility is a requirement of this position.

- Take heart rates and blood pressures as needed. Evaluates, corrects, and instructs members on proper exercise techniques. Proactively provides appropriate direction to members performing dangerous or harmful exercises. Maintains a safe and clean environment for members.
- Performs health appraisals using approved protocols. Provides facility orientations.

IMAGING:
- Provides quality images with accuracy and efficiency, using optimal skills and knowledge of all equipment.
- Technologists will be trained in all general radiology exams/areas so that they are able to rotate through the department based on workflow needs.
- Utilize the VIP transportation system to arrange for patient delivery.
- Positions patient for diagnostic radiology exams according to department procedures, training, and machine requirements with a high regard for the safety and care of the patient.
- Operates radiology equipment, determines and sets exposure factors, sets technique utilizing all relevant factors to ensure accurate and quality images with minimal and acceptable repeat rates.
- Uses computer image processing, as needed to select, process, optimize and archive images to PACS.
- Completely tracks exams in the Radiology Information system.
- Develops and presents images and related patient information to radiologist for diagnosis.
- Assists with patient transport by moving patients using standard procedures.
- Assists in the training of Radiologic Technology Students, and adheres to dept. policy on supervision of student technologists.
DOCUMENTATION:
- Gathers complete documentation of all pertinent information to provide accurate and timely service to customers.
- Responsible to correctly identify patients by checking their identity per department procedure.
- Reviews patient chart and orders to insure correct examination.
- Labels images completely with demographic, position and other needed documentation. Follows dept policy on the use of anatomical markers.
- Logs activities, gathers charging information and charges exams as required.
- Follows department and hospital procedures and policies.
- Performs quality control and quality assurance, records results and reports variance from normal equipment function.

- Assists physician during cases while operating a variety of complex radiologic imaging equipment including fluoroscopy, digital subtraction angiography, and ultrasonography and cone beam CT application.
- Prep the patient and prepare supplies under sterile conditions for the procedure. Scrub in with the physician and assist in performing procedure if needed.
- Accurately obtains x-rays for the exams while being respectful to the patient’s abilities and safety issues.
- In collaboration with other staff, provides patient care during examinations.
- Operates automatic injectors and selects the appropriate contrast agent for the patient and the exam under the direction of the physician.
- Work independently on-call with department physicians and nurse.
